Default Great circle vs. Rhumb

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to when to use a Great
Circle route as compared to a rhumb course?
For instance, mid Atlantic, travelling north west to Canada over a few
hundred miles?

Many thanks

Paul

Course that are more north-south gain little or nothing from using a
great circle (lines of longitude form great circles, after all).
Routes that are less than about 600 nm gain little from using a great
circle course. And of course, routes with big rocks in the way (see
other thread).
