Kopi Luwak, made in neighboring Indonesia from coffee beans excreted by
native civet cats, is reputedly the world's rarest and most expensive coffee, painstakingly extracted by hand from the animals' forest droppings. Despite the closeness of the coffee's home on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi, Australia's first civet cat brew has only just gone on sale in Queensland state, selling for A$50 a cup at the Heritage Tea Rooms, west of Townsville. "Everyone calls it cat poo coffee," cafe owner Michelle Sharpe told the Australian Associated Press. "People who willingly pay the $50 are uplifted by the thrill of the experience," her husband Allan Sharpe said."It's as good as my private life is bad. This is the kind of coffee you renounce your religion and sell your child for," one taster quoted by AAP said. http://www.reuters.com/article/lifes...D8159120070516 |

Kopi Luwak certainly exists and can be purchased, usually for high prices; I've heard $400+ a pound. Unfortunately, since very few retailers actually collect and process the beans personally, there is little guarantee of provenance. Moreover, the coffee is not particularly good, certainly not compared to the extremely high quality offerings available today. If you want the world's best coffee, you can spend about $50 a pound for the winner of one of the national Coffee of Excellence competitions. The man who started these competitions is George Howell, who sold The Coffee Connection to focus on creating ways of encouraging small farmers to increase their quality. I took a class with George a few weeks ago ("Coffee 101") where the issue of Kopi Luwak came up. His comment was "Coffee from assholes, for assholes." |

Makes about as much sense///people are so stupid...to willingly drink something with civet poo in it! Of course, amny people rub civet anal gland sewcretions on their bodies whgen it's distilled into perfume as the oil carrier but at least it doens't go into the digestive tract....ugh....wish I had a bridge to sell.... |

With tiny women's clutch purses and men's ties selling for upwards of $2500 in trendy outlets, there is no limit to the opportunities to separate money from fools. Max |

It's about the ugliest bridge around, breaks down all the time, and is in a constant state of being painted...and they're thinking about making it a toll road (which I guess it was when it was first built) Heck, people from this side never go to the Penninsula as it is (it's a very weird environment on this side of the bridge) When we tell epeople we go to Newport News to shop they look at us strange..they all stay on this side and travel the extra 20 miles to go to Suffolk or Chesepeake! Heaven help someone shosuld go across the bridge! |
