It's not a matter of affording. It's a matter of doing it
the right way.
If you're going to use roll-ups, the least you can do is
take them down
when you're not using them. Like you said yourself,
unattended roll-ups
come unwound in high winds and tear themselves to shreds.
The often
damage the boat in the slips beside them. That's not only
stupid but
inconsiderate of your neighbor.

By all means he does. Only a "lubber" would leave a sail in the elements,
when it can be safely and properly stored below. g
