I suppose you bag your main sail everytime, too?

It's a matter of doing it the right way. If you're going to use roll-ups, the least you can do is take them down when you're not using them. Like you said yourself, unattended roll-ups come unwound in high winds and tear themselves to shreds. The often damage the boat in the slips beside them.
