Oh me, 27F, poor you, I woke up to -4F, and that's warm up here lately!

Why can't you guys get with the program and use Celsius like the rest of

It's a problem...Mr Sails posed some distance/time/rate problems to his
junior/senior Oceanography classes in meters and kn and they were all
totally lost...didn't even have the sense to just go to the conversion

How can you teach science and not use SI units? A real fine group of
budding scientists Mr. Sails has there!

As an excercise in frustration everyone should be forced to do a few
basic physics problems using pounds, slugs, poundals, pound-feet. ..etc.

They don't retain becasue it's not used in their real worlds..so
far...the Maths Dept does teach it of course and most of these kids are
either in Algebra 2, Trig, or Calc...yet they can't translate between
the classes..what? a math problem in Oceanography? My God...we thought
this was about water! When some of them found out it was about combined

were going to go visit dolphins at the Aquarium and collect seashells....

Sorry to disappoint you Joe, but it's the variability of the climate that's
the problem. GW = higher highs, lower lows. A couple of degrees warmer isn't
the problem directly. It's an indirect effect. Hold onto your socks, things
will be getting worse before they get better, assuming we do something now.

Well, the British schools did it for several centuries. Of course, they
also schlepped everything around using horse-drawn wagons.

Now that we're well into the 19th century, the time has long since
passed to start using modern conviences like a measurement system that
makes sense.

As an excercise in frustration everyone should be forced to do a few
basic physics problems using pounds, slugs, poundals, pound-feet. ..etc.

Be sure to state the results in furlongs per fortnight.

Marty,

A very good question. I don't have an answer for you. Just to many
people are scared to death about the change over. We do have a lot of
Neal types that refuse to change.

By the way; I've almost changed over and use factors for English. I
still have a lot of trouble with linear measurements. I convert to
metric after I cut the plank. Sorry.

The problem is teaching the comparison...it's just like learning a
language..if you're translating in your head all the time you'll never
be able to speak...you just have to learn it flat out and use it that
way and not think linear...same with temperatures...the system does more
to hinder learning by making the comparison when none is needed...I hate
it when elementary texts define a meter as "a bit more than a
yard"....What's that supposed to mean?

When I was a kid and in the scouts we had camping 1 weekend a month. Back
then there was a lot of snow. I am no stranger to winter camping. We had a

Our Girl Scout troop winter camped too..in Michigan..was quite
rugged...we had trenches, though, that we then buried at the end of the
weekend...with the traditional log front....that was back in the days
when getting your WIlderness badge really emant something...

Are you of African descent? Your post reminds me of a joke I heard years ago.

There was this big, handsome black man who lived in Washington D.C. His name was
Leon. Leon was a real hit with the ladies. One day Leon met a woman who couldn't
keep her hands off him. She grabbed his bicep and said,
"Oh Leon, yo sur has big muscles! How big 'round is yo arm?"
"About 20 inches." replied Leon.
Then the woman put her arms around Leon's waist and she asked, "Leon yo sur has a
small waist, how big 'round is yo waist?.
"About 28 inches." replied Leon.
Then she grabbed his thigh and asked, "Leon how big is yo thigh?"
"About 30" 'round," said Leon.
Then she slid her hand up to his crotch and she said. "My o my, Leon, yo sur
has something very big in there. How big issit Leon?"
"About fo' inches," said Leon.
"Naw, Leon, ya gotta be ****in' wif me, it's much bigger than that, sho is!"
"I said fo' inches," Leon repeated.
"I doesn't believe ya," said the woman. "How does ya measure that, Leon?"
Leon replied "From da flo'."
