14-year-old set to become youngest person to sail solo across the Atlantic

The teenager, from land-locked Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, set off from
Gibraltar on the 3,500-mile voyage to the Caribbean on November 18. He hopes
to reach his destination off the island of Antigua, and break the world
record for the youngest unaided sailor across the ocean, on January 2.

Technically speaking, is it still sailing solo with dad sailing 2 miles
behind him?
It's a great thing for a kid to do, and I'd do the same if it were my kid,
but it seems to detract from other teenagers who have actually done it
alone.

True, at least psychologically it's not the same as being alone. And others
just as young have done it before. You can't expect reporters to know the
history or do the research. They never do on anything.

Reporters are so stupid these days. Can you believe they write a story and don't
even tell what brand of boat it is? 28-foot is about all they say about it. Duh! They
went to college and got a degree to be so ignorant about what sailors are interested
in?

ah, confirming that my instincts are on target. I smelled bull**** and now I
see I was right.
I posted a comment to the newspaper and they have not published it. I can
only assume they are only interested in posts that support their point of
view. Shameless.
Looks like dad's design is a safe boat for a solo crossing only if done in a
convoy.
It's all well and good, except that they are hoping to top someone's genuine
and honorable record.

Yup, just a stunt for advertising. Fool people into thinking they're buying a seaworthy
