14-year-old set to become youngest person to sail solo across the Atlantic

The teenager, from land-locked Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, set off from Gibraltar on the 3,500-mile voyage to the Caribbean on November 18. He hopes to reach his destination off the island of Antigua, and break the world record for the youngest unaided sailor across the ocean, on January 2. -- jlrogers±³© |

Technically speaking, is it still sailing solo with dad sailing 2 miles
behind him? It's a great thing for a kid to do, and I'd do the same if it were my kid, but it seems to detract from other teenagers who have actually done it alone. Scout True, at least psychologically it's not the same as being alone. And others just as young have done it before. You can't expect reporters to know the history or do the research. They never do on anything. jlrogers±³© |

They went to college and got a degree to be so ignorant about what sailors are interested in? Cheers, Ellen |

I posted a comment to the newspaper and they have not published it. I can only assume they are only interested in posts that support their point of view. Shameless. Looks like dad's design is a safe boat for a solo crossing only if done in a convoy. It's all well and good, except that they are hoping to top someone's genuine and honorable record. Scout |

Fool people into thinking they're buying a seaworthy boat. The MacGregor model exactly... Like they say, there's a sucker born every minute... Cheers, Ellen |

Not only will Daddy be tagging along, they will have a dozen GPS's, weather faxes, shore support, telephones, internet, automatic pumps, radar, auto pilot, epirbs, medical monitoring, and so on. Enough to make Captain Joshua Slocum vomit, and give Robin L. Graham the screeming ****s. A new class of record keeping is in order. With support, and without. The whole stunt is sickening. Capt. "Capt.American" wrote A new class of record keeping is in order. With support, and without. The whole stunt is sickening. Did you notice how it says *to sail solo across the Atlantic*? Well I just looked up solo in the dictionary and it said alone and without a companion. Having another boat and your Daddy tagging along doesn't seem alone and without a companion to me. I think the headline's cheesy. But, that's what passes for journalism these days. Cheers, Ellen |

"The Tide 28s being used for the record attempt have been modified and equipped
to bring them up to Ocean standards" So according to the manufacture the "Boat" is not actually designed to sail in the Ocean. A boat not designed for use in the water.........I'm not nearly as experienced in sailing and boats as many here so please explain to me how a boat works that is not originally designed to be put in the water. -- Message posted via http://www.boatkb.com |

The Times, like virtually every paper, has a point of view. It has one more in line with yours. I will give the Times credit for appointing a "public editor" in an effort to restore its lost credibility. His job is to evaluate how well the Times is doing on truth in publishing, and his columns are recommended reading. But for a variety of views, read a variety of papers. That's true, just because the piece reads "Readers' Comments" is no reason for me to believe it in any way reflects the comments of readers who see the scam for what it is. |
