Didn't screw up too bad today!

But I don't have the squares built yet - so it's kinda a moot point.
That's going to give me ample oppertunity to look dumb... I'm sure.

About 5 hours to cross to the end of the lake and get (slowly) home.
Winds light and variable, but we moved - and under sail power alone!
WooWoo!

Dorothy did real well today.
Kinda got her tiller backwards a couple of time on the way home,
but I know she was getting pretty tired by then.

Got a lot of sun and had fun too.

Today was mo' betta. Wind 5 to 10. Let's head for the lake!

Dorothy _sailed_ us out of the slip and away we went flying low across
the lake!

About an hour out we sudenly hit a hole in the wind and went limp.

Then the real wind showed up! 15 to 20 gusting 25.

Spirit laid over and slithered like a sidewinder!

This was the first time Dorothy has had to handle any real blow and
it was a bit much for her. The boat would try to round and loose drive
then D'd get her back on course and laid right over again.

Things happened a lot quicker than she's used to.
The look on her face was a mix of exhilaration and dread as the lee rail
started throwing spray.

I was caught between wanting to try out the new main reefing - and not
wanting to let go of the main sheet!

Finally decided the best course of action was to run like smoke for home.

We were making hull speed on a run! First time for that...

Well, like the title says - I like this boat!

Richard

You got that right, Katy.

I just recently installed the reefing gear.

Today would have been a fine time to try it out but I was too -uhm-
concerned (yeah, that's it) to let go of the main sheet.

I did have to spill it a couple of times. I wanted to let her get
the feel of it, but ya gotta be pretty quick and firm on the stick.

She's still a little timid about the tiller being "backwards" to
get agressive with it.

She is picking it up - but with little mechanical background I do
quite a bit of regressive explaining.

Levers and switches and gears - Oh My!

But we're having fun.

And that's a Goof Thing (tm).

Jealous of a poor little boat that, through no fault of its own, looks
shoddy because of an owner who doesn't have a clue how to even apply
registration numbers? Not likely. If anything I feel sorry for the boat.
The very first impression knowledgeable sailors get of that poor boat is
the owner is sloppy or clueless. Either way it's a shame. If a boat can
have pride that boat is ashamed to be owned by such a dope.

Notice what it says "
Letters must be separated from the numbers by a space or hyphen; for

It says "a space" not seven or eight spaces like Caveman did it. People
who can't follow simple instructions are probably people to be avoided

Wilber,

Those numbers were on there 20 years before I bought her.

She was in pretty sad shape when I got her. Rigging all kinked and
broken, filthy dirty, rudder pintles broken off, and some parts
missing. But the hull and deck were sound. I've spent most of last
year getting her in reasonable shape.

At the end of this season I'll pull her out and paint the hull.
At that time I will replace the numbers - but for now I'm going

Another grade school drop-out squeeks . . . Listen up, fool!

The space one letter or number takes up is a space. You have a space bar
on your keyboard. When you touch the space bar does it insert a
half-dozen spaces? No it does not, it inserts one space. It inserts the
space of one letter or number.

Wilber,

Those numbers were on there 20 years before I bought her.

And how hard is it to scrape them off and do it right? Doesn't your boat
which looks pretty good otherwise deserve to have registration numbers
put on correctly?

She was in pretty sad shape when I got her. Rigging all kinked and
broken, filthy dirty, rudder pintles broken off, and some parts
missing. But the hull and deck were sound. I've spent most of last
year getting her in reasonable shape.

You did a pretty good job. She looks great except for the registration
numbers which look like an idiot put them on. Since you are not the
idiot who put them on why continue the idiocy by leaving them that way?

At the end of this season I'll pull her out and paint the hull.
At that time I will replace the numbers - but for now I'm going
to enjoy sailing her - as is.

I would be ashamed to be seen in a sailboat with crap registration
number placement. If you can't afford new numbers and letters with the
correct spacing even if you're going to scrape them off the end of the
season when you paint it then you are just one of the masses who
demonstrate by their actions that they have little pride in what they
do.

If you don't like it, well, tough!

And, if you don't like being criticized then straighten out the
stupidity on your boat.

Now take your hateful self-serving attitude somewhere else.

No. I take it where I choose to take it. It's still a free Usenet the
last time I looked.

Because even if you are right about something, your attitude
is such a turn off that NOBODY is going to listen to you.

That makes you look all the sadder. Refusing to take action to make
legal (you can be ticketed for improper registration numbers) and make
respectable what you sail just because your temper gets in the way is
childish and not worthy of a sailor. Grow up. If the criticism is
invalid that's one thing. But valid criticism is to be taken to heart.

Oh baby, it's a lot of work, but the results have been very satisfying.

For what it's worth, I looked at a Catalina 27 Saturday - 1977 I think.

_Asking_ price $3500 - negociable.

It's all there - and the hull looks sound. One small soft spot on the
deck near the aft port side of the deck house.

Atomic 4 runs - pretty smooth too.

Rig _looks_ good.

But-

She's been in the water for about 10 years without much care.

The interior is bad - real bad.

The main bulkhead doesn't quite reach the floor anymore, and the front
sole is rather - well - thin?

No way I can part that one in the driveway for a year or so for a total
restoration.

But if someone has the space, time, and money, she's certainly available.

And the price, as I said, is negociable :)

No, jealous of cavesheep.

Now why would anybody be jealous of some Rube who can't

follow simple

instructions?

Cause he has a nice boat with a nice babe in it?

The boat looks good other than those dumb registration numbers. The lady
looks fair, but I've seen better. . .

Yeah, so have I.

But not many sweeter!

For what it's worth... that would have to be very, very
negotiable... for all the work you'd need to do....

I kinda suspect that the price could be negociated down to about a buck
hard cash. The owner seemed quite "motivated".

But iit would take quite a pile more to put her back ship shape...

regularly
cruised with him...

I took him out once, but he tried to climb the mast.
But couldn't get much traction on aulminum.
Very frustrated kitty!

help him out next time, stick a rocket up his ass and light

The space one letter or number takes up is a space.

Where does it say that?

You have a space bar
on your keyboard. When you touch the space bar does it

insert a
half-dozen spaces?

Yes, if I hold it down.

We had a 1078 O'Day that we sailed for 7 years...was a great boat EXCEPT
for the Bomabastic 4...the ONLY good thing about them is that they are
fixable...over and over and over and over again...and then over again
some more...interiors in those are pretty easy to fix..most of that era
used some type of vinyl for bulkhead covering so is very easy to strip
and replace...I did ours with some heavy industrial ulpholstery material
and industrial strength fabric glue. Cusion recovering, if you don't do
them yourself is pricey. A bad looking sole can be covered with
carpeting with Velcro stickies on it to keep it in place but needs to be
pulled up when you're not there so mildew deosn't set up undeneath...In
that year Catalina, you could probably find a much better boat for not
that much more, so keep looking...

At that time I will replace the numbers - but for now I'm going
to enjoy sailing her - as is.

If you don't like it, well, tough!

Now take your hateful self-serving attitude somewhere else.

Because even if you are right about something, your attitude
is such a turn off that NOBODY is going to listen to you.

Look up the difference between an "em" space and an "en" space.
(M-space and
N-space)

CWM

NMNMNMNMNMNMNM
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Minor and insignificant, at least on the font I'm looking at (Comic Sans
MS) though there is a slight difference. So leave the space of the
widest letter for the space between TX 2151 NM but don't leave half a
dozen spaces and make it look like some retard did it.

I rebuilt a Cal 20 pretty much from the hull up, and while it was a
rewarding experience, I don't think I want to do that again. g
