I guess building a roaring open fire, and cooking dinner on a spit, is
out of the question.

Nope...only kind of BBQ grill you can have is a charcoal one and you
have to take it out into the commons away from the buildings to use
it...can't use our little LP grill at all..am waiting anxiously for our
lease to expire in June...

I could *never* go back to living in an apartment. Where I am:

the waterfront is 2 minutes walk away
the nearest neighbour is 200m away
I can shoot rabbits on my front lawn without anyone caring
I can run a compressor and nailgun all day
I can have a big satellite dish on my shed
I can light up a couple acres of bracken & scrub and the neighbours
applaud.
It's quiet at night (because we all have enough courtesy to not ****
each other off).
There's no light pollution so you can look at the stars, and the moon
is glaring bright.

Complain about a BBQ? Hah. I can BBQ an entire *cow* over an open fire
and as long as it isn't one of the neighbours', the only complaints
would be from those without an invite.

MOVE!!!

We can do all that too...back at our place in Michigan...where there are
no jobs....but we wouldn't be able to afford the cow to BBQ...

When you've lived in Jakarta at one extreme, peace & quiet is worth
paying for. There's a fine line between a place with insufficient
amenities and one so big that it's painful. Hobart is just on the small
side of big enough for me. Tucson, with 500,000 people, was about right
but the climate sucked. There's only about 500,000 people in all of
Tasmania, 200,000 in Hobart.

Katy's right about jobs tho. I could only come back here because I got
a job.

Random selection of pix. Roof trusses go up tomorrow I hope. The
scaffolding is in the back of the truck ATM. I'll take some more shots
as it progresses.

Bought a 3 phase 12" table saw and attached 6" buzzer/planer off of
Ebay this week. $615 AUD or slightly less tan I paid new for the POS I
have now. Freight company picked it up yesterday in Sydney, should
arrive next week. My Chinese POS 10" table saw will be on the market
and if I get enough to cover the freight bill on the replacement I'll
be quite content. Had 5 years out of it so I can't really complain but
man, does it *hate* ripsawing blue gum!

The old saw weighs maybe 50 kg. The "new" one weighs over 300 kg. I
like old iron. Local company has a big bandsaw for sale, stands 4.2m
high with 900mm dis wheels. ATM they want too much for it but how many
people can house something like that? I can - now :-)

Thanks for the pictures Peter, that's a great "shed"! Tas looks like a
marvelous place, apparently today has some historical significance for
you; Abel Tasman first sighted your island in 1642 on this day.

I wish I could take my bandsaw from work when I retire, it's old DoAll,
wheels are about 600mm, 2m or so high, variable speed (50-5200fpm),
integral band welder and cutter, she's over 50 years old. I wouldn't
trade for a brand new one if you paid me, well unless you paid me lot.

Cheers

Know what you mean. I have an old Grob Bros 18" bandsaw, the main
competitor to DoAll and about as good. Mine also has the speed range
for stainless on the low end and wood on the high end but it isn't the
variable speed model. It's a great machine. Cost me $600 which was
about the same price as a new Chinese 14" bandsaw with woodcutting
speeds only, no blade welder etc. The $400 to freight it to my place
was well worth it.

I have a little list of tools I want and when something on the list
comes up, I grab it. These days I'm basically trading up each time and
for some stuff I don't think I'll ever find anything better - or need
it. The shed is so I can have all the stuff useable under one roof.

Thats nothing I have a 8" coping saw, with a wooden handle, up to 80
strokes a min. Cost me 12 bucks at the local ACE hardware

I need double offset 45 degree open boxed end 1/2" fuel line wrench,
think I'm going to have to build one. Crazy Brit engineers!

Cool. Let me know how long it takes you to cut thru a 4" long bit of 1"
thick Inconel with it. I'll expect an answer in about 3 years if you
start now....
