I could *never* go back to living in an apartment. Where I am: the waterfront is 2 minutes walk away the nearest neighbour is 200m away I can shoot rabbits on my front lawn without anyone caring I can run a compressor and nailgun all day I can have a big satellite dish on my shed I can light up a couple acres of bracken & scrub and the neighbours applaud. It's quiet at night (because we all have enough courtesy to not **** each other off). There's no light pollution so you can look at the stars, and the moon is glaring bright. Complain about a BBQ? Hah. I can BBQ an entire *cow* over an open fire and as long as it isn't one of the neighbours', the only complaints would be from those without an invite. MOVE!!! PDW |

When you've lived in Jakarta at one extreme, peace & quiet is worth paying for. There's a fine line between a place with insufficient amenities and one so big that it's painful. Hobart is just on the small side of big enough for me. Tucson, with 500,000 people, was about right but the climate sucked. There's only about 500,000 people in all of Tasmania, 200,000 in Hobart. Katy's right about jobs tho. I could only come back here because I got a job. How about a pic of your new 'shed'? http://community.webshots.com/user/peter_d_wiley Random selection of pix. Roof trusses go up tomorrow I hope. The scaffolding is in the back of the truck ATM. I'll take some more shots as it progresses. Bought a 3 phase 12" table saw and attached 6" buzzer/planer off of Ebay this week. $615 AUD or slightly less tan I paid new for the POS I have now. Freight company picked it up yesterday in Sydney, should arrive next week. My Chinese POS 10" table saw will be on the market and if I get enough to cover the freight bill on the replacement I'll be quite content. Had 5 years out of it so I can't really complain but man, does it *hate* ripsawing blue gum! The old saw weighs maybe 50 kg. The "new" one weighs over 300 kg. I like old iron. Local company has a big bandsaw for sale, stands 4.2m high with 900mm dis wheels. ATM they want too much for it but how many people can house something like that? I can - now :-) PDW |
