One of the few things I don't like about the CS is its iron keel.

I used mine for a rock plow last year, dragged two anchors 1/2 mile,
made a furrow a foot and half deep in the rock bottom (I wasn't on board
at the time). Got towed of the way I went in, hauled 3 months later to
find some of the paint scratched of.

Those CS's are damn tough boats!

Same one you have, I'm replacing the Yanmar with a Volvo-Penta D1-13
this winter.

Out of the frying pan?

I've never had a marine Volvo, but it seems that all I hear about them
is negative, especially when it comes to parts.

What has your experience been with the iron keel?

Well as I told you I took a bunch of paint of last year. This year I
brushed the rusty bits with a wire brush and used the same Interlux XXX
on it that I used on the rest of the bottom. I hauled on Sunday and
there are a few rust blister on the bottom 4 inches or so, nothing
serious, I'll probably follow the same procedure next spring. It would
take a long time to rust through that keel, at the thinnest point it's
what, about 8" thick?

Cheers
Marty

I found that attempting to get parts for both my vovlo engines was a unique
experience. Rarely does one get overcharged, informed all parts are
back-ordered with 2 month wait lists, get billed for global air freight
shipping to the local retail outlet... find out they had one in stock all
along.... all the while being talked down to and subjected to rude remarks.
The extra touch to make you feel like you are putting them out was amazing.
Positive point about volvos... their extra weight makes for an excellent
mooring block.

Funny story... my marine mechanic phoned the local volvo dealer. It was an
extra $200 and a week delay to have a part shipped. He drove down to pick
up it up.[a fuel pump - $4800.00] and ended up punching out the parts guy.
ha Ha ha.... ask me again why I'm so delighted with my Yanmar 3GM.
