Same one you have, I'm replacing the Yanmar with a Volvo-Penta D1-13 this winter. What's wrong with the Yanmar? What's not wrong? Cylinder is pear shaped, piston is pear shaped, rings gone, crank bearings gone, crank scored, cam bearings shot, cam shot, valve stem guides shot, valve seats shot, valve faces shot, injector pump shot, injectors shot, transmission is totally 'poooned.... $6500 in parts alone, so I said "****-it, let's get something else". It took 3 months just to find sources for all the parts. The motor's thirty years old and getting parts for it is next to impossible. Why spend over seven grand to fix an old motor when I can get a new, more powerful, guarenteed for 4 years lump? What happens if I fix it and 2 years from now something else breaks and I can't find a replacement part? As for Vovlo horror stories, I've heard and equal amount of the same for every other manufacturer. I first became aware of Volvo's parts issues in an article in Practical Sailor, circa the late 80s. Since that time I've heard similar issues of high parts prices, poor customer service, unavailability of parts, etc. from persons who've owned Volvos and some who've had them overhauled. I've yet to hear of the same sorts of stories from Yanmar, Westerbeke, Universal, Nanni, or Perkins owners, although I'm sure there are *some* such issues with each of them. So far, in my experience, Volvo holds the record for parts and service problems by a wide margin, which is one reason I'm reluctant to buy a boat with a Volvo, either conventional drive or Saildrive. Well you can say you've heard one such story about Yanmars now. ;-) I'll let you know if I have any parts issues. The guy I'm dealing with used to be the Yanmar dealer, but he had supply issues with Yanmar and switched. Perhaps Yanmar support in the US is superior to what it is in my area? Time will tell. Thanks for the input though. Cheers Marty |
