The Swiss are not the only ones fuming about this issue.

New Zealand is planning to hold a fund-raising auction that
would sell silver remnants of the original trophy, first presented
in 1851 and symbolizing supremacy in international yacht racing.

They allowed a kook to smash the Cup and should have rebuilt
the cup with the original material instead of keeping it and using
it for their own profit.

If New Zealand does this, we should boycott the country and it's
products.

You present an "either or" option, neither of which is appropriate.

New Zealand has no right to these pieces. They failed
to protect "The Cup"--none of it belongs to them.

If New Zealand wants to fund underprivileged kids in a sailing
program the RNZYS can fund it themselves--they can afford it.

While an argument could be made that the pieces should
go to Alinghi--as they currently hold "The Cup", I feel these
pieces should go back to the trustees of the American's Cup,
the New York Yacht Club.

They should be returned to the New York Yacht Club and placed
in one of their display cases with a short article on how they
came to be damaged.

They should not be auctioned off.

replace it with a replica, and then auction off the parts for a

Maybe they should drop it first and get the insurance company to pay

They have less right to the bits because the cup was in NZ posession
when damaged...Alinghi had no claim.
They should be returned to the New York Yacht Club and placed

Why?
When the Cup was damaged, NZ were the trustees.
If anything the junk should travel inside the cup...to be held by the
new trustee.

They should not be auctioned off.

So you would prefer that some damaged beyond repair bits of junk
shoule be put in a display case when some benefit could come from the
dreadful deed of some maniac?

In any case, Alinghi's argument is that they should have the right to
sell off the bits....do you subscribe to that?

Typical Snobbish Commonwealth behavior. The Commonwealth and Empire has been
looting the world for centuries. They never return anything and never pay
for anything they break. Why expect anything different from them now? It's
that sense of entitlement.
