Danger Danger
Whats the most dangerious or scary situation you have been in on a
boat? Ever issue a Mayday? Ever have a crewmember injured badly or killed? Ever save a life at sea? My answers. Most scared situation was in SW pass of the Mississippi. I had way to much cargo high up on deck and almost capsized a 125 ftr with 15-20 passangers. Also as a deck hand I almost ran a 225 ft supply boat up on the beach, I was coming in the jetties, but managed to be on the outside of the jetties ....oppps! Washed overboard in 12ft plus seas, more thought it was all over, never had time to be scared. No Maydays. Yes, I've had crew that had his fingers taken off, another both ankles broken, Mate cut in half when a hawser parted, saw one de-capated same way on a tug pulling our ship, kidney stones, 2 lost at sea, suicide's, heat attack, leg smashed off, and a girl gave birth. Picked up a helo crew and passangers that went down in the gulf. 4 people. Not sure if I saved them, a shrimper was heading there too, I just had the fastest boat, only 1 float inflated and the chopper was upside down. Joe |

The atmosphere was so charged that my watch tingled so I took it off and threw it below, St, Elmo's Fure was jumping on the lifelines. We got the heck out of dodge and headed back to Leland. Got in and tied off, with about 30 boats trailing behind us...mahor aquall vame through and tore canvas off a bunch of boats and put one up on the rocks. Ever issue a Mayday? Yes. When we were caught out in a storm off Little Point Sable in our 22' O'Day...rounded the point and hit majorly building conditions despite a weather report of clear skies and 2 gooters. When the first 5 footer hit we lost the tiller bracket and engine mount, Fortunately, MMr Sails had hold of the engine and it didn't go over. tried to sail on sails alone but conditions prevented it so we called. The alternative with out shoal draft vessel, was to be beached. Sea Tow wasn't in the area yet, so the CH was the on;y alternative. Ever have a crewmember injured badly or killed? Mr Sails tore the torator cuff in his right shoulder on a gybe. Ever save a life at sea? I threw a fush back once because it was too small. My answers. We had a close call, once. The spinaker pole whacked our bowman on the head. He was concussed. We were 30 miles offshore at the time We kept him awake for about 4 hours. He really, really wanted to sleep. but the First Aid instructions said that he should be kept awake. After 4 hours, he began to return to normal. Regards Donal -- |
