Cut to shorten - enscapulated keel
Has anyone any experience shortening a fiberglass enscapulated keel
that's packed with lead pellets.. I've seen posts that it's been done with solid lead, but nothing about a keel of this type. Thinking I could mold a lead bulb to add the weight back in.Found a dandy boat with 3' draft but want trailerable, they were also built with fixed shoal draught version at 2'3" I could pattern from. Experience anybody? tom Somebody, stop me! |

Experience anybody? That's going to be some pretty serious structural glass work. I'm sure it can be done, but it will be working upside down and crouched under the hull. It might be easier to mold a whole new keel in the dimensions & configuration you want, cut the old keel off, remold the keel root, and put on the new one. Fresh BReezes- Doug King |

So don't look to us for justification! |
Cut to shorten - enscapulated keel/OK Jeff, ya got me!
Cute Jeff, I gave your response a five star because it made me smile..
But I had really hoped to hear from someone who has some experience doing such a thing. It's probably just a crazy idea anyway! tom Jeff Why stop you? Sorry, I have no experience in keel carving. As I was reading you post I was reminded of several incidents I've heard about where boats were declared totaled because the encapsulated keel was damaged. Also, my current boat has no ballast. |

Experience anybody? tom Somebody, stop me! Don't do it! DON"T!!! You will be trying to attach to the end of the fiberglass grain instead of crosswise to it. It will never hold!!! I tried it with a Beneteau and ruined the boat. STOP!!!!!!!! |
