Walk is what actually happens. It's on the other side from the water
movement, which is the wash. Typically, one looks for the wash instead of
the movement at the dock. Then, you know that the walk goes in the opposite
direction.

For part 2:

The big difference is what is called bank effect. If the wash
bounces off a stone quay it has a great effect, versus pilings
and a dock where is passes underneath.
