Incorrect. Smoke is a valid answer--not fire.

I know that one. It's a barrel of burning oil on deck. But, you
couldn't
use it in California or they'd fine you for air pollution.

No points for you Jon. You didn't read the question.
I asked you to name one, not a half dozen or more.

There is always the bonus question.

My favorite is a gun fired at one minute intervals. If

you have the gun,
why do you need help?

Let's see... gun, red stars or parachute or handheld

flare, continuous fog
horn, raising and lowering your arms (what if you only

have one arm?),
square flag with round above or below it, fire, SOS,

Mayday, flags NC,
Eprib signal I suppose.

Not sure about orange smoke....

Inverted US flag would probably work, but wouldn't work

for some country
flags.

Darn. And, I've given away the answer... it's the gun right? :-)

Of course, if there is fire, then I'm thinking people on other boats would
conclude there's a problem.

Right. It is just like firing on helicopter and claiming it was a
wedding.

But you are too late. Someone beat you to the punch.
Anyway, you are not pointless, so don't feel too bad.
