read of his recent posts there wasn't much about sailing. I'd apologize to him but

Yeah, but it's fun to talk about it. Sailors are an open-/closed-minded
group with strong opinions, good ideas, and are will/unwilling to listen to
others. Most of the people who frequent this group are essentially decent
people and extremely helpful, while being occasionally rude and annoying.
You need a thick skin to hang out here.
