We just returned from our Vineyard cruise. Here's a few pics pulled
from the summer's pile o' pixels. There are two mystery boats for the
experts to identify. I know the answer to the first (as should many
readers) but I'm not sure about the the second.

Why are you lying about those whales? I've seen those same pictures
years ago. Even the bird is in the exact same position as it was way
back then... Shame! Do you really sail or do you just fake it?

That's a pretty lame troll. Show me your alleged copies. I could
easily post the original unedited pics (these were the best of 37 I
snapped) and you can can read the tags. But why would I fake such low
quality pics when I already posted much better pics, taken with a much
better camera (Canon G5 rather than a Pentax OptioWP) two years ago
about ten miles north?

http://www.sv-loki.com/Whales/whales.html

The Pentax is a great submersible pocket camera, as the kayak pic
shows, but without a view finder, and a screen that gets washed out,
not to mention a tiny lens, it isn't up to the whale photography. My
disappointment with these shots is why on our next trip I brought the
G5 and played with it in Hadley's.

Like I said, I've seen those whale pictures a couple or more
years ago. I've eidetic memory when it comes to photos.
What sticks it in my mind is the bird doing a sharp turn
near the dorsal fin.

I recall a discussion in this very group where those same
photos were linked (seems to me by you) and there was a
discussion of what kind of whale they were. I recall Capt.
Neal saying they were Right Whales and Mooron calling him
an idiot and saying they were humpback whales and somebody
else (maybe Gilligan) saying they were Minke whales. I'm
sure those guys would remember the photos as well if only they
could sober up for a day or two or if they were still around.
But, it looks like only Gilligan's still around. The chances of
that boy sobering up are slim and none...

I just provided the link that I posted 3 years, taken from a nearby
spot. Its probably mostly the same whales. The group is a mix of
humpbacks and minkes. After both sessions, I consulted with the
experts from The Center for Coastal Studies who were at the same sites.

The reason the birds are there is that the whales are herding fish by
swimming in tighter and tighter circles. The birds also circle to
pick up leftovers. We spotted the first group of whales because there
were a large number of birds resting about 5 miles off the coast.
After that, it was all hands on deck as lookouts.

Neal, if your recent institutional stay was voluntary, please go back;
you're not well yet!

Neal? Guess again. But, don't try changing the subject.
You're busted and ya know it. Shame on you using old
pictures and claiming they were taken recently. Some of us
don't smoke dope and have good memories.

Too easy.

I noticed it as we came in but didn't quite recognize it. I pointed
it out to my wife and told her it was in the style of a Bristol
Channel Cutter. Later, when the launch picked us up another passenger
said that our dinghy (a Fatty Knees) was designed for his boat. I
asked if he had the Bristol Channel Cutter, and he said "No, I meant
our specific boat." Sure enough, he had bought Serrafyn from the Pardeys.

It's certainly a Lyle Hess design, perhaps a Bristol Channel Cutter (28') or
a Falmouth Cutter (22').

The second mystery boat looks like a Shields, but perhaps a 6m..

Great pics, Jeff...loved the one of Amelia and Molly in the
tree....Amelia's really a pretty girl....those mooring balls seemed to
be realy close together...wouldn't want to be hanging on one if someone
was on an opposing swing!
