The headline states, "Windstorm rates for condos to increase
330 percent" (Free Press, June 21, 2006). The article goes on to cite statistics that paint condo owners as woebegone victims drowning in a flood of "Big Insurance" greed. Oh boo-hoo! What a sniveling bunch of crybabies! One would think insurance was an entitlement from the way the press and the public carry on. While I expect a purblind public, I wonder what's wrong with newspapers these days when they print such victim-mentality articles week after week without once looking at a dictionary and reading a definition that renders their articles little more than gratuitous rabble rousing. Webster defines insurance as, "a contract (insurance policy) purchased to guarantee compensation for a specified loss by fire, death, etc." Note the prominent use of the words, "contract purchased." The way the aforementioned article and others like it carry on, one would think the typical reporter these days views insurance as an entitlement, like cheap gasoline, social security, Medicare, etc. - just more sugar candy for the liberal "gimme" crowd. Correspondingly, the way home and condo owners bellyache and agitate for insurance being turned into just another entitlement demonstrates ignorance on par with the typical reporter. Isn't it ironic that numerous hurricanes combined with dishonesty and greed on behalf of the insured have all but driven legitimate insurance companies out of the windstorm insurance business while those partly responsible by grossly overstating their losses and filing false claims have the cheek to play the poor innocent victim? So the State of Florida takes over with their own version of a non-profit insurance company to fill the void - i.e. socialism. Why, you're some kind of a mental midget if you honestly think windstorm rates would do anything but balloon once a State bureaucracy takes charge. Anytime you get government involved be prepared to open your wallet wide. The bottom line is insurance companies sell insurance and make a profit in order to stay in business. They are not in the charity or entitlement business. Be prepared to pay the market rate. If you think you can get away with cheating them, think again. They just jack up their rates. When they get their fill of your cheating, you'll end up with no insurance or government getting into the insurance act so be prepared to pay confiscatory rates. If you can't afford to pay these rates please stop your whining and complaining. Live without insurance or move out of hurricane-prone areas and allow those of us who can afford to live here, to live here in peace. I hope this helps.
