West Texas Beaufort Wind Scale



1.. Windforce 0 - no wind at all - 0 mph
not a shiver to a bluestem bloom stalk

2.. Windforce 1 - light air - 1-3 mph
cottonwood leaves shiver

3.. Windforce 2 - light breeze - 4-7 mph
mesquite leaves shiver

4.. Windforce 3 - gentle breeze - 8-12 mph
patches of grass in the pasture move in unison

5.. Windforce 4 - moderate breeze - 13-18 mph
tumbleweeds begin to roll

6.. Windforce 5 - fresh breeze - 19-24 mph
dust skids along the ground

7.. Windforce 6 - strong breeze - 25-31 mph
the first ten degrees above the horizon pink with dust

8.. Windforce 7 - blustery winds - 32-38 mph
tumbleweeds begin to bounce as they roll

9.. Windforce 8 - it’s a mite windy - 39-46 mph
sky pink with dust except overhead

10.. Windforce 9 - dust storm - 47-54 mph
turn on the car lights in farming country

11.. Windforce 10 - sand storm - 55-63 mph
don’t go outside, or your ankles and shins get raw

12.. Windforce 11 - a hail storm is coming - 64-72 mph
head for a safe place

13.. Windforce 12 - tornado - 72-200 mph
the only safe place is in a underground shelter
