Sailing in Wyoming
We did not go to WY to sail but we did camp at Signal Mt campground on
the edge of Jackson Lake in Grand Teton Park and I was surprised to see it was such a great sailing venue. It is miles wide and 18 miles long with numerous islands and clear water. It is immediately at the base of Mt Moran with the Grand Teton off to the left so the scenary is spectacular. I was surprised to see there were at least three marinas and we saw powerboats up to 30' (average seemed to be 18') and sailboats up to 26'. The marinas only charged $24/night for a slip but there is a $40/year boating fee and $25/week park pass. There were rental powerboats but no rental sailboats, hmmmmmmm......... This is Wyoming so there is copious wind and the water was warm enough that a spill would not be life threatening. I was interested in seeing if there were seasonal jobs for my older kids and sure enough it looks good for waiters and waitresses. Because there is little housing available, they have park dorms available for a very low amount of money ($50-80/week including meals). The people who frequent the lodges generally have money so tips are good. Why not get my son (only 16 right now) to take a small sailboat, say something like a Catalina 22 there and put it on a mooring buoy (there are lots of them) and have him take tourists sailing? He wouldnt make a lot of money but hey, sailing in a beautiful place and getting paid for itis an achievement. He could incorporate to shield himself (and us ) from liability. Unfortunately, he'd have to develop some good judgement about when he shouldnt go sailing........ |
