Cuz that's what it means to give up sailing. You don't compromise by buying a trawler. Compromise would be a Fisher 37 or a Nauticat. A trawler means you GAVE UP SAILING. Period. And spare me the crap about sailing dinks around. Doug doesn't do it anymore. If you haven't time for a sailboat, you haven't time for a trawler and a dink! Your friends are as gay as Doug. Fairly sure I never mentioned time as an issue, but I'll let them know what you think. Sure they will be as concerned about your opinion as I am. RB 35s5 NY |

And a number of my friends have or are thinking about moving from sail to power, with trawlers being the boat of choice. They haven't necessarily given up on sailing, just on the practicality of owning a large sailboat given their individual circumstances. One, in Boca Raton, lives on a canal on the wrong side of a couple of fixed bridges. Wants a boat he can keep at his house, rigged and ready. This is the guy who taught me to sail when we were both teenagers. His decision makes sense to me. Other similar stories. Doug's probably just as rational, but if not it would be only an opinion and none of my business anyway. I've always found trawler people to be more like sailors than powerboaters. They will give you ''right of way'', with a friendly wave. They tend to be more quite at anchor than your normal PBer. Bob**** is all about image. He thinks his image of a sailor is cool. Maybe some day he'll wake up to reality. -- Scotty.....''One who never gets out of the Sound cannot, with any degree of credibility, comment on the courage of fellow sailors'' |

Time spent sailing doesn't count againt your life. For most, you included, sailing is a few hours escape from life. It is far from being life itself as is an arcade game or some other distraction. What moment sums up your life? I don't speak for "most," only for myself... It is no escape. It is life. The alternative is not worth considering. You've been away from it too long. -- Capt. For me for now it is an escape, something for "fun". |

Of course I'll not bother them with this. To offer this opinion to this group of individuals with their sailing resumes and life accomplishments, and to let them know that it came from a LIS day sailor who never leaves the Sound, who spends his non sailing hours as a yard errand boy, a marine junk peddler on ebay, and an incessant troll merchant in this group would be disrespectful at the very least. They would rightfully question my sanity. Frank |
