Next you'll be saying child seats and seatbelts are optional.
Really Bob, Aren't they just that. You just shot yourself in the foot. If they aren't optional; then why aren't they on SCHOOL BUSES ??? They transport many, many more childen under 13 than go sailing. OT http://community.webtv.net/tassail/HTMLTutoralPractise |

Nutsy,
I'm willing to bet there are more children killed in cars wearing seat belts than kids in sailboats not wearing life vests. http://community.webtv.net/tassail/HTMLTutoralPractise |

There's no need to bet. That's really comparing different things. It seems
like a pretty smart thing to wear seat belts and PFDs as appropriate to the activity. :-) -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Thom Stewart" wrote in message ... Jon,
How in the world can you turn such a "Blind Eye" to Stupid Laws! One man driving alone without his seat belt hooked can be fined for breaking the Law while the same police officer can direct traffic for a School bus with at least 50 children in a school bus and driver--- ISN't"T BREAKING THE LAW??? spare me. How about children under 13 years of age on a Ferry Boat. Running free, playing grab ass. Is the Captain & crew responsible for them. Where is the Mighty C.G. authority on those sight seeing vessels in S.F. Bay?? Ol Thom |

Sorry Thom, but I believe there is a move underway to require school busses
to install seat belts. This is not a stupid law, and I'm amazed that you think it is. As to ferry operation, there are specific requirements for the ferries with respect to PFDs. If you take a few minutes and look, you'll find they do require them to be present, but it obviously isn't feasible to have people wear them. This is again a different situation than on a pleasure craft. The USCG is very interested in what goes on on the SF bay and environs, and they are diligent in living up to their responsibilities. The ferry companies are quite interested in safety, and I have witnessed crew telling parents to curb their kids' activities while aboard. At the moment, there are no requirements for adults to wear PFDs on pleasure craft, and while I think it is important to do so, it's not a law nor will it be. Children, however, are required by law to wear them. The law needs to be enforced. Seat belts are required by most states to be worn by all individuals in the car/truck. They have saved countless lives. Of course, nothing will prevent every kind of accident, but far fewer now are fatal due to seat belts. Feel free not to wear either seat belts in a car or a PFD on the water. It's every adults right to be stupid if that's your choice. -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Thom Stewart" wrote in message ... Mostly... maybe they should pass a law that says you have to wear seat belts
on Beneteaus. :-) -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Scotty" wrote in message . .. "Capt. JG" wrote in message ... There's no need to bet. That's really comparing different things. It seems like a pretty smart thing to wear seat belts and PFDs as appropriate to the activity. :-) Isn't it a law? |

I was making a point. At the moment, there are no requirements for adults to wear PFDs on pleasure craft, Some do gooder liberal tried to pass such a bill for MD this year. Fortunatley it was shot down. I agree. What if I need to change my PFD while underway? Would I have to go below? So you think the state has a right to tell you what to wear or not wear? Of course. I'm a liberal. Do you believe in helmet laws? PA removed theirs'. Here, they're required. Most people are smart enough to wear them, except for a few pro football players who probably played too many games without their helmets. Do the football leagues require them to wear helmets? Maybe they should lift that requirement. |
