Being stuck in a Kia MiniVan with Robert, BB, GUY,Mysterry, and the
whole troop of puppets?

No doubt lil Thom is clawing the back window to get out, and Rob
disabled the door locks to keep the others from jumping to end the
misery.

Bwahahahahahahaa. Sure is a fresh breeze of air here with that van load
of ASA'er on the highway.

Can you smell anything yet Doug? Katy?

Got in the water late because of doing a new bottom. Stripped old
bottom this spring and had 2 coats of barrier and 2 coats of the the
new Petit Vivid sprayed on. It came out looking pretty cool. We mixed
4 parts white with 1 part black. Spent a couple of days burnishing the
Vivid with bronz wool. Nailed a 1st out of a 17 boat fleet on the
second night out. We are now in our combined series with the club
across the river. Finished 5th out of 20 boats in the first race of
that series. Last week the race was canceled because of zero wind.
First time that has happened in a couple of years.
So why are you late going in?

I've heard of a lot of people doing this, is it really
better than wetsanding?

Getting into summer doldrums now isn't it? I've certainly
sat thru a bunch of "shake 'n bakes" up in that
neighborhood. This spring has been pretty good for wind down
here.

I would think that the metal would produce a rougher surface
than wetsanding. But wetsanding is a super PITA, especially
if taking the effort to get it fair. On a small one-design
it's not that big a deal to wetsand with a longboard up to
600 grit and finish with 1000 grit. This produces an
incredibly perfect bottom (and the realization that skill &
attention to detail during the race itself makes far more
difference).

.... Since I only had 2 coats of
bottom paint sprayed on I skipped the wet sanding with the idea of
doing it next spring. I didn't want to take paint off and I was also
running out of time.

OK that makes sense. It has always seemed kinda dumb to me
to put on expensive putty & paint then sand 50% of it off...
but that's the only way anybody knows how to get the results!

... We had already missed 4 races of our first
series. I burnished with the bronze wool to get rid of the fine
sandpaper feel of the spray job. It actually came out almost as smooth
as if I would have wetsanded. The light gray "custom" color looks hot.

That is a good looking boat. The color sets off the green
stripe nicely.

After wetsanding burnishing with bronze wool or burlap polishes the
surface.

Don't know how you reached that conclusion. A Merit 25 and a Tartan 35
first come to mind. The Tartan owner even has a J35 main. There is
also a Ranger 22 and a Beneteau 23 that I think are fractional. We had
a Laser 28 but the owner sold the boat last year. Personally I feel
mastheads are better on the bay. Bigger chutes for light air.

It's difficult to believe that this would be an improvement
on wetsanding with 1000 grit. But it's a long tough roud to
get up to where ws'ing w/1k gr will do any good, whereas it
may be that burnishing with bronze wool can bring
improvement right out of the box.

Masthead J29s w/outboards are the most popular version of that boat on
the Chesapeake. Must be a reason. Of course you can always "turbo" a
fractional boat. There are a number of Laser 28s w/masthead chutes.
Same goes for Hobie 33s.

In the past I've never done either. I was using Awlgrip Allstar Gold
Label and rolled it on. This time around I decided to switch to Vivid
which is a hard multi season paint that can be wet sanded and/or
burnished. I was happy with the results but the true test will be next
year to see if it is truly a multi season paint.

I've faired and templated a couple of boats. It's a *lot* of
work, and a dirty & tedious job... enough of a PITA that one
should consider hiring somebody else to do it... except that
it's also extremely painstaking work and there's only one
way to make sure it's done right.

We started using 800 grit wetsand on the 470 as a psych move
in the perpetual arms race (that boat hull never touched
anything except the water or it's fleece-lined jacket) and I
decided that it really was smoother. Been using 1000 grit
for years but you have to work up to it, as use of any other
grit will leave grooves that it takes forever to remove with
1000 grit. This leaves a surface that feels as smooth as
polished marble.

We used Petit Trinidad hard finish paint, not really a
racing bottom but hey it's on a tugboat! After three years
it was OK, only had a diver go over it about 4 or 5 times
during that period. With a regular diver it could probably
have gone another year.

It will be interesting to hear what you report after a year
on Vivid... obviously it's a pretty fast bottom finish.
