Sailing the florida Big Bend

I dont like centerboards for big boats cuz the trunk gets in the way.
I also have problems with their reliability having seen several boats
lose theirs.
That's not a problem with the centerboard, that's a problem
with the owner. Centerboards require maintenance. It's a
PITA but every benefit has a cost.
... Extreme fouling conditions also limit their reliability.
It's the "M" word again.
It is a matter of preference, I prefer my simple shoal keel with
encapsulated ballast.
And it's a free country. No reason why you have to have a
centerboard. I happen to like them, not only do they go to
windward better than a shallow keel (when there's enough
water to put them down) but they also allow adjustment for
balance of the helm.
Every boat is a compromise!
