Sailing on a Wing and a Prayer....
Let's face facts: You choose a boat for the type of sailing you plan to do TODAY...not years down the road. Have a look at poor Joe, forced to buy a smaller fun boat to get his real sailing fix. Or Jeff, forced to buy a Catamaran and also sail small boats to get some real sailing fun. Then there's perhaps the saddest member here in Doug, who cashed in his sailing chips for a powerboat. And yet he still hangs around like a Hell's Angel on a Vespa. It's truly pathetic. For anyone seeking a boat, find the vessel that suits your dreams NOW. Joe has Dead Cloud, a crismson barge more house than boat. He bought it with "plans" to go cruising, but he posts here almost every day. He cruises less than we do. So why not buy the right boat...something fast and fun that doesn't require a second boat purchase? Why spend so much energy outfitting a boat over a period of years...watching initial installations turn brittle with age? Joe claims he knows how to outfit a boat, but folks we meet who cruise long range seem to get their boats ready in a few weeks. What is this "outfitting" dance Joe uses to keep his brittle dreams aloft? Be warned: Joe's dream and failure are commonplace. I sell boats, such as a Irwin 37 for sale next week, that are proof of such poor philosophy. The poor guy bought a 25K boat and proceeded to install 20K worth of "outfitting." Like Joe's, the boat sat and sat. Slow, a dull design with a lot of space, the liveaboard lifestyle ended without any realization of the dream. He now owns a Cal 29 and sails two or three times per week and is planning on a cruise to Florida. He finally has the right boat. So, use Joe's sad story as a bright beacon...avoid at all costs for the costs will be high. Capt. Robert B....Sailing the dream NOW 35s5 NY |

You can never teach anything about cruising, passagemakers, live-aboards, being a Captain, or thinking ahead. Glad we got that strait. I know people who have their six packs and they can't sail at all. So what does that ticket really mean? Nada. Since you think your boat's hull speed is 13 knots...I rest my case. It's below 9, Joe. It's a little thing called physics. But you missed that class along with remedial English. CAPTAIN RB 35s5....faster than Joe's steel snail NY |

There is no law for hull speed. Theoretical hull speed is a precise measurement and generally close to the mark. Joe already said his boat does 9 knots on 30 knots of air. So how is his hull speed 13 knots? Does it hit 13 knots in 80 knots of air? RB 35s5 NY |

Nutsy,
You really are full of ****!! Really! Theoretical hull speed is a precise measurement and generally close to the mark. ----This is your statement! Read it again. Theoretical;----Is a precise measurement?? Spare me. Generally close to the mark;-----this is what you call a "precise measurement!" What a dumb ass statement. Nutsy; I think you had better find out what "Hull Speed" is all about! It seems you haven't a clue! Ol Thom |

We did not join the tow until she was offshore, did more positioning than towing. My boat was the Point Barrow. Sorry no pic! ;0( http://www.mie.uth.gr/labs/mex-lab/P.../pics/B2-3.jpg You think wind makes your 35s5 surge, imagine how wind loads can affect this tow. Thats a 135 ft 4,400 HP 28Kt 3 million dollar boat bubbles Wow! Did I mention that I drove an F40 a few years ago? Does that make me a better sailor? What exactly does your experience with those craft have to do with sailing? At least we can begin to understand why you bought what you bought. But no one can fathom how you thought your boat had a 13 knot hull speed. What's your WL, Joe? Hmmmmm? RB 35s5 NY |

What exactly does your experience with those craft have to do with sailing? I thought we were talking about the defination of Capt. However to address your re- direction. Large light craft have great windage, learning to deal with windage and infact using it to your advantage in crucial in mastering sea going vessels and tows. Imagine running down the ICW a 400 ft wide ditch.... pushing a 300 ft barge drawing only 6" with 13 ft of freeboard sticking above the water with a single screw 350 HP lugger tug. And the wind at 25+ knots dead on the beam. If you do not no how to sail, you get blown down ie: go no-where except the downwind bank and wait for the wind to stop(once you get blown down, with a big empty no tug has the leverage to get it back up. Now if you can sail, it get's you all excited and makes you giddy( the way you get sailing now) it's a rush, you flat out haul ass. The fun part is when you meet a guy coming the other way, doing the same thing. It all has to do with dealing with mastering the skills needed for others to call you Captain. At least we can begin to understand why you bought what you bought. But no one can fathom how you thought your boat had a 13 knot hull speed. Bubble's.... I have a 120 HP main and a GPS. I dimpled my hull with a ball peen hammer, I did this to make it like a golf ball (same tech Lexus uses on the underside of cars) causing micro eddies that make my hull superfast and super slick. How do you do a steady 10.5 knot when the published hull speed for the 35s5 is 7.2 kts? Joe |

How do you do a steady 10.5 knot when the published hull speed for the 35s5 is 7.2 kts? Wow, what a pile of lies. Dimpling a hull does not effect the formula for theoretical hullspeed. Plus you already claimed you do 9 knots in 30 knots of air, and SURGED to 13, remember. Caught in a web of lies, Joe can't squirm free now. And you can't even get my boat right...such a mess for you and all your stories...Hull speed is 7.98. Someone needs to buy you a calculator along with a few sailing books. It's becoming more and more clear why you own a motorsailor. RB 35s5 NY |
