distances are typcially shorter in deep snow. A plowed street leaves snow over ice in most conditions.. RB 35s5 NY |

Right, for a snowmobile. Right, then we agree. A snowmobile (or an ice boat) on ice is actually planning on a thin film of water. Same for a SUV on a plowed street. Even with ABS, the wheel slips and stutters and stopping distances are longer. In fact, stopping distances can be longer in the rain than in heavy snow. Snow offers continued resistance when stopping and also impedes steering input due to "tracking" by the rear wheels. This is basic driving info. I guess you're no professional. Once again you're dead wrong, but Mooron's comment should have alerted you. Yous till like your boat, right???!!! Bwahahahahahahaha!! RB 35s5 NY |

Now Bob.... don't bait Bobsprit like that. We both know that if there is ice under a snowfall... it's an Ice Road.... and the three requirements are to be able to make progress, to be able to direct progress and to be able to halt progress. Certainly if your "SUV" has a 12" clearance and you drive into 24" of snow.... stopping will not be an issue..... progress and direction will come to an abrupt halt. If the same vehicle encounters a low traction area... a simple reduction of speed will allow all three factors to be retained and safely make directed progress CM |

In the short term plowed roads can be more dangerous as it may expose the
packed down ice layer at the bottom. However, once the ice layer is exposed, it begins to melt and, over the longer term, the plowed road is much safer. Snow tires don't work on ice. They need snow for the tread to grab. The snow can have some adhesion to ice. So, in some cases unplowed roads offer more traction. Amen! "Scotty" wrote in message ... It was called four wheel drive, but only two wheels are driven. If you think otherwise here's the schematics of the differentials for a CJ2A: http://www.thecj2apage.com/om10.html Show me either the limited slip clutches or the differential locking mechanism. Hint: there aren't any. It's a real simple test, put the thing up on blocks (4 wheels off the ground). Stop one wheel and the opposite one on the same axle will turn when put into gear. True 4WD will have all wheels turn, if you try to stop one the vehicle will stall. I've worked on CJ2A'a and used one for snow plowing for a short while. It's only 4 wheel drive if the load on each wheel per axle is the same. Float one tire on each axle and you're not going anywhere, it's not driving the wheels in contact with the ground. Amen! |
