Take away the video and the Ipod is very easy to beat. In fact there
are units out with higher capacity, more features, and a truly
customizable audio output. The Ipod works well, but it's more about
style than function for a lot of folks. At least we know Joe was right.

50 inch LCD and if the room is very cold image quality is effected. But
hey, Joe...maybe they don't have LCD's in your "area!"

It has been a trying time here (Oz - Queensland) with very high
temperatures compounded by a succession of violent storms. Have had our
boat on the hard for the past week and after several days of breathing
anti-fouling dust, had a sudden storm that destroyed a two-pack
brightwork makeover. Had just finished - everything still wet when it
hit, complete with gale force winds, dust then rain and hail.


Ouch! Well at least it was a force of nature rather than
your boat-next-door showing up with a grinder to send lots
of fiberglass chips into your fresh varnish.

The video iPods, as far as video goes, are of limited use to someone
like me. Very much a one person thing. My kids love them for personal
viewing but I only tend to watch a movie etc., as a shared experience,
so don't find that aspect so useful. The resolution is too poor to be
used as media source for displaying on a larger screen, but as a device
for storing music, audio of all types, and photos, they are hard to
beat. I have, as well as a great deal of music, a large collection of
old-time radio shows, all available on the net and legal, not under
copyright. Everything from Amos and Andy to The Shadow. My wife and I
find them entertaining, often more so than many modern TV shows. They
are also good for audio books, language courses etc.


Thanks for the info, as a general rule I am pretty far
behind on gadgets but these sound like they could be fun...
we always want to show pictures and these days that seems to
require a laptop.

others. I have a MacIntosh iMac with a 21" widescreen that serves as my
main computer, my Nav computer and as a media centre when swiveled to
face the Saloon. It also feeds - via UHF radio, flat screen (LCD not
plasma) TVs in the staterooms and crew cabins. The system has DVD and
audio plus mast mounted all weather security cameras triggered by active
infrared sensors that will pop up on screen whenever triggered. I don't
find the difference in quality between Plasma and LCD to justify the
cost, though in the early days the difference was noticeable.

Agreed, we just did some shopping and decided on a Samsung
19" model. It has a wide viewing angle (a problem with
earlier LCD screens) and good control menu.

My advice would be to figure out what you want to plug into
the monitor, and make sure it has compatible inputs. The
Samsung has only one set of RGB-comp inputs but 2 S-video
jacks and an antennae jack, so plugging in several other
components was easy without needing a switch box.

house, cutter rigged sloop, (Regina Bellus) purchased after previously
sailing for more than twenty-five years with a Roberts Mauritius Ketch.
She heels a lot more than a ketch would, much taller rig, but

remote steering is about all that will allow her to be single handed if
necessary. We usually have volunteer crew, but often sail with just the
two of us. Haven't *had* to test her single handed yet, but it shouldn't

We have to be back in the water by Feb in order to keep a rendevous with
cruising friends in Vanuatu so the recent setbacks are more than usually
annoying. It is also much hotter on the hard as far as living aboard
goes, (I don't believe in air conditioning ... but have recently
purchased a number of industrial quality fans ;)) so am looking forward
to Feb.


Putting tarps over the deck to keep the sun off really helps
too.

is
what limits low frequency hearing. Your big, clunky ABC Wide World of
Sports
headphones just give you sweaty ears. Ear buds are the best.

The best headphones in the world are not earbuds...for good reason.
No studio uses ear buds
No audiophile would be caught dead with ear buds.

Now tell us why the best phones cover the whole ear and have LARGE

I painted the decks over the Christmas holidays and had dew at night
take out the shine of the paint. Required a 3 coat.

The Bruce Roberts boats are good design cept the square chins on most.
Never seen a Mauritius Ketch, will google an image.
Mauritius is one of the favorite islands I've ever visited, back in
1980.

I do not use an inverter, all of my AC electronic devices use twelve, six,
five and three volt rails and I have a current limited power supply
providing these voltages when and where required and have modified all
equipment to input what is necessary. They still work when plugged into
conventional AC outlets but work from the ship's 12 volt supply without
the losses incurred by an inverter.

and one of our investment homes five years ago to purchase the Regina
Bellus and haven't had cause to look back since. I am in my fifties and my
wife in her early forties - we have quite a few years of cruising ahead of
us. I am a writer, my wife a photographer and we supplement our income
with our skills. Don't make a fortune, but sufficient to avoid dipping
into our savings or selling another investment home.

I often read various sailing oriented newsgroups but seldom post, mostly
because of the constant foolish and annoying behaviour of people like
Capt. Rob and his apparent collection of either sock puppets or emulators.
I will try to ignore him in future rather than set an equally bad examples
for others.

There are several nav packages that are Mac based, I own most and each,
like those for Windows platforms, has its advantages and limitations.

I also run most of the PC based packages as well. One of the nice things
about the Imac G5 is that with its 64 bit processor and a few gig of ram
it runs Microsoft's Virtual PC with decent speed and better reliability
than I used to get with the earlier Windows (98) boxes.

Contrary to some expressed views on here, I am not a Mac fanatic, I am
an IT professional. IT hardware and software is the focus of most of my
writing. I use a Mac because when outside a computer lab., I can run all
PC, Mac and Unix/Linux software. Something that most Mac owners know but
many PC owners don't, is that the OSX operating system on modern Macs is
actually a flavour of Unix. Macs can be used with the Apple GUI or from
a Unix GUI or command line. Add to that a 64 bit operating system, a few
gig of ram, some decent processor speed, good graphics etc., and you
have a very powerful and versatile system. There is a lot of public
domain/open source Unix/Linux software about that can be quickly and
easily modified to suit all manner of purposes. Control systems on a
cruising yacht is just one area of usefulness.

a list of hardware used for your security system.

All over the counter electronic supply store hardware, software written
and compiled by me for the specific purpose. Commercial software for the
same purpose does exist; the same security that monitors a private home
works equally well from a yacht. My primary contribution to the hardware
was salt/waterproofing components and connections that were meant for
domestic use. Mostly achieved with overlapping heatshrink on all exposed
connections. Liberally applied high melting-point lithium grease under
all heatshrink seems to have helped. It has been five years now with no
corrosion or connection problems.

access to details of our personal lives.

Several years ago, when we still had the the Mauritius I posted some
photos of the boat with my wife and daughters, dressed as you normally
expect when on board, and she got some sexually explicit email and phone
calls. Someone got our phone numbers from our website. Since then we do
not tie our web site to newsgroup posts, even though most newsgroups we
post to are career related. The yacht name, Regina Bellus is actually a
latin variation of her real name. We were going to name her that, but
ended up opting for the English version after a family vote. ;(

She is as otherwise described. I may, in fact probably will, set up a
new web site that I can post photos on, photos of the boat and places we
visit, minus photos that include my wife or daughters in swimwear etc.
The recent rubbish about men's wives and comments on their levels of
attractiveness simply reinforces the opinions of my female family
members. Regardless of the direction it takes, positive or negative, it
offends women to be rated like cattle or to have comments about their
appearance made by strangers.
