Southern vs northern boats
A friend who was boat shopping once remarked that boats in FL looked
older than their counterparts in the north. I ascribed this to the effects of sunlight and more use over a year. Did Rob notice this? |

"John Cairns" wrote in message I'd say more UV than anything else. He could also be comparing salt vs. fresh water boats. Could also be short seasonal immersion and extended seasonal availability for maintenance.... but more likely it's the fact that Northerners are simply better sailors and own superior vessels. CM |

Sailing in the north requires seasonal work. It keeps
the sailor in tune with boat maintenance. Down south it is easy to let a boat go. Even northern sailors tend to move their boats south to cut down on the annual maintenance. The net result is that many, not all, southern boats fall into disuse and suffer from lack of maintenance. It is the boat graveyard. A similar things happens with beer. Excess beer gets shipped south. wrote .... A friend who was boat shopping once remarked that boats in FL looked older than their counterparts in the north. I think it would be just the right amount of beer. No matter how much.

What a load of bull Bart. Southern boats are used and maintained year
around while northern boats develope hull humps from sitting in a cradle half the time. All that moisture trapped in the shrink wraps and plastic hulls freezes and un freezes so many times they all develope osmosis blisters. Joe |

I think there is too much inbreding in the South. With the recent
(relatively) influx of Northerners, the South's gene pool will improve. There's also lots of inbreding in the regions around Caribou, Maine. Californians take great care of their boats, especially in Southern Kaulifornia. Kaulifornia does not have an inbred gene pool. Amen! "Joe" wrote in message oups.com... What a load of bull Bart. I believe the reason for the gene pool stasis in California... is because
the state is over-run with homosexuals. Amen "Bob Crantz" wrote in message nk.net... I think there is too much inbreding in the South. Joe, not every Yankee pulls his boat for the winter. And it's not
6 months. More like 3-4 months. isn't it good for a hull to 'dry out' once in a while? -- Scott Vernon Plowville Pa _/)__/)_/)_ "Joe" wrote in message oups.com... What a load of bull Bart. Now does Bob Cranz really want to redo the unpleasantness of 1860-5?
We just about put a whompin on ya then with 1/4 yer population and 1/7 the industry. Things are a bit more even now. Besides, we dont b'leve in marry'n any closer than cousins. Ya gotta 'member, all them folks down in Palm Beach who couldnt figger out how to vote were all retired yanks, not natives. Wern't enough brain cells among em to push a nail thru a piece a paper. Up here in the panhandle where all the natives live, we had no problems. Livin and owning a boat up where the water turns solid dont sound to bright to me. I spent lotsa time in Ca and those people actually think that something that looks worse'n a po' cracker shack is worth $700,000. You gotta remember, Hillary is the souths revenge. |

Joe If a hull develops "humps" from sitting in a cradle, the keel isn't being properly supported. http://community.webshots.com/photo/...01593556HoPljK The boat is being supported as well as it would be while sitting in a cradle, the cradle pads are only there to keep the boat from tipping over. Err...John, I think that's what he was saying. If the weight of the boat is resting on the cradle pads instead of the keel, the boat isn't properly supported, and will develop "hums" (indentations if viewed from the outside) where the pads were bearing on the hull. "while northern boats develope hull humps from sitting in a cradle half the time" What he said. I don't try to read between the lines, he didn't qualify the statement. John Cairns |

How boats age is a factor of their enviroment ie the crap that's in the
air. That's why the Boobs boats have always looked like **** and why his new ride will look 30 years old in just a couple of years. I looked at a S2 9.1 once that had spent it's entire life on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. The thing was truly MINT! It looked like it had been made "yesterday" |

Up north, you gotta go now before the season is over. ... It is the boat graveyard. I've seen a lot of derelicts in back lots up north, too. We have them here in the GLs in droves. Some haven't seen water, aside from the rain collected in their bilges, for over two decades. I suspect a few folks experienced surprise to learn that boats *do* require maintenance. Max |
