A day is measured by the earth rotating about its axis. The year is measured by the earth rotating about the sun's axis. So which rotation is responsible for the leap-second? Are the rotations linked or mutually exclusive? The moon slows the earth's rotation due to the gravitational propagation delay. Does it also cause the earth to take longer to go around the sun? The moon is at it's point of lowest rotational potential with respect to the earth. Relative to earth, the moon does not rotate, we always see the same face. The earth is striving for its lowest rotational potentail with respect to the sun. Eventually, the earth will stop rotating and one side will always face the sun. I think Texas will wind up where the sun doesn't shine. Amen! |

It's is the rotation of the earth mostly slowed because of the friction
of tides. This results in a small but continuous slowing down, so that the day is now about two milliseconds longer than it was 200 years ago. You do the math it will be several billion years before the earth stops spinning, and Texas will stop in the Sunshine. Joe |

How could friction be a primary cause of the earth slowing? If I roll an iron ball near a magnet and it slows down is it friction?
