Seamanship Question #27

I can think of four compasses each with a dedicated
purpose, that I'd want on an ocan going yacht.

What are they?

Seamanship Question #27

KVH Datascope.... bar none one of the best handheld fluxgate compass /
chrono / rangefinder combo around.

Helm station

Hand bearing

Nav station

Telltale, over skipper's bunk

Also, as variants, compass binoculars, electronics that can feed
several stations, etc. I keep an old army compass for going ashore on
foggy days, but lately I've used a small gps for that purpose. (Its
embarrassing when you can't find your boat at night ...)

And, of course, the ocean yacht needs a compass in the liferaft.

And don't forget, JAX tells us that a compass can't help you to navigate.

Seamanship Question #27

Until they break. The KVH repair policy is "buy a new one."

Steering compass at the helm. (Inside and out)
Hand held compass for visual fixes.
Boats compass for an emergency backup.
Drawing compass for radar fixes.
Tattle tale compass for glancing at from your bunk.
Fluxgate for the autopilot/radar stabilization.

Oops, more than 4!

I have a KVH and find it a bit too finnicky to use. It is a geek type
compass that is not as functional as it sounds. A simple handheld works
better if not quite as precisely.

What you really mean is Hand Bearing Compass. 1 point.

Helm station ===Correct Hand bearing ====Correct
Nav station ===Correct
Telltale, over skipper's bunk ===Correct

#3 would be a below decks compass.

Also, as variants, compass binoculars, electronics that can feed several
stations, etc. I keep an old army compass for going ashore on foggy days,
but lately I've used a small gps for that purpose. (Its embarrassing when
you can't find your boat at night ...)

I lumped these two together-- dinghy compass.

2 points to you Jeff, and although CM beat you to two of them,
I'll give you two more points for answering the entire question perfectly.
