Joe. She's a nice home, sure and steady. But performance is not what she's about. Joe wrote: That depends on how you define preformance. In 30 kt winds and 20 ft seas RedCloud will out preform any boat here. In speed? Not even close. In sea-keeping? probably, although hard chine hulls tend to be a bit more noisy & bouncy than others in the same displacement category. The Johnson 18 has been clocked at over 20 knots and outruns the waves (ie faster than any boat can go by surfing), but after a few hours you start looking for a more comfy place to relax, maybe have a sandwich. Some of us have talked about doing longer races but I really don't want to stay in a wetsuit for 24+ hours even if it did get me in the record books. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |

Your Johnson 18 has hard Chines?
Yeah in sea keeping. Ol Swabbie thinks 20 footer in 30 knot winds is a survival condition. I was just talking about prime sailing conditions and great surfing above hull speed. A single reef, board down to 11 feet, nice stable comfortable wheelhouse to drink coffee and snack of sandwiches as the auto pilot handles the wheel. And Doug you take you hand off that tiller to eat or drink your going over in those conditions. In 24 hours we would pass you in 48hrs we would be coming back to rescue you.:0) Joe |

Yeah in sea keeping. Ol Swabbie thinks 20 footer in 30 knot winds is a
survival condition. Holy backpedal. Doug says your boat wouldn't even be close! And you suddenly try to pretend I called it survival conditions? Face it, Joe. When it matters, your boat is ALWAYS slower. There's virtually no real world situation where you're going to be faster than a boat like mine or even Slocos! And that's a fact! RB 35s5 NY |

Your Johnson 18 has hard Chines? Nope. The hull sections are developed from the ellipse, max lift, minimize sirface area & drag... a little unplanned benefit is that the steering is very responsive & light with no surprises. Yeah in sea keeping. Ol Swabbie thinks 20 footer in 30 knot winds is a survival condition. That's because he doesn't know how to sail! .... And Doug you take you hand off that tiller to eat or drink your going over in those conditions. Depends on when... the boat is very well balanced and as long as you're well between the ditches, you can take your hand off and steer with mainsheet & body language. Now, if you catch a wave wrong, dig in, aren't prepared, and the helm snatches itself out of your hand (like say for example you're trying to open a beer), then you have a problem. And a tiller pilot ain't gonna help! ... In 24 hours we would pass you in 48hrs we would be coming back to rescue you.:0) No way, every hour would put at least 5 miles or more between us.... however, depending on the circumstances, after a few hours I would probably want to pull alongside & offer to trade for a little while, take a break. Hey when are you going to get that Swift Solo? I'm thinking about it, but am also seriously considering bigger boats. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |

Bull**** Swabbie. I can still make way when your day sailor is down and
out. No Doubt. And thats without starting the 110 HP main engine, with 3 AC running full power, cooking on a 4 burner propane stove fresh fish out of the10CF freezer. Therefore... I will arrive faster and make a better SOG than you in winds over 20kt's and seas 3ft+. It's a fact. I admit in 7 kts winds with a slight chop on the lake your 35s5 will outpreform RedCloud. Joe |

I've decided to hold off on the solo. Im getting an itch to take off
and cruise a few years and do not need more stuff to get rid off. Allready have to much STUFF. But then again my sweetheart has a Texas auctioneering licences and we could get rid off it all in one day. Just finishing up restoring my 1961 Econoline PU truck, all I have to do now it paint, it's all primed and ready to go. I still have the La Brisa to sail the lake and we will tow as a lifeboat dink. It's to big to davit, may sell it and get a 11 ft Boston Whaler or Carolina Skiff. Our friends now in Rio Dulche are having a blast, and it would be nice to meet them there next hurricane season then hit the islands afterwards. Joe |

"Capt. Rob" wrote in message Actually, Joe, you're wrong about that. Even Sloco's Depress 30 would outsail you in those conditions, though he'd work hard. In survival conditions she'd be a more comfortable boat. Try and be a little more blatant with your trolls... Will Ya!? If they bite on this... I give up! :-) CM |

Clearly, you and Joe should have a sail-off... we can all come along and be the judges... the test waters will be Cape Hattaras in a moderate nor'easter (winds to greater than 30 but less than 60 knots)...
