Just got off the phne to the skipper who has hired my cat for the year. He rang late last night to say they'd hit a submerged object, were hove to, all safe and waiting for morning to assess damage. Phone call just now has confirmed that they hit and rode over something very hard while travelling at an estimated 12-15kts. At least they rode over it instead of punching a hole right thru. Was the hull damaged? Stbd board was heavily damaged and required a dive over the side to cur away the damaged carbon and kevlar so the board could be fully retracted and withdrawn from its case. It will require replacement. Stbd rudder blade has been sheared off along the designed fail point and will be replaced with the spare they are carrying. By "spare" you mean one in stores, right? Not the one on the other hull? That's a "spare" too! Unless a thorough inspection in port reveals further damage they can continue on their way and the parts will be waiting for them at a future port of call. Very unfortunate, and a real hazard these days when travelling along shipping routes. Yep, and it's one good reason for a carbon or kevlar hull, and/or full positive flotation. That's life!....I think I'll open the bar a little early this afternoon :-) Under the circumstances, nobody would blame you. I hope the damage turns out ot be minimal. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
