South of you... I can't remember. Victoria is on my list of places to go.
From what I've heard, it's an amazing place.

Victoria, where is Thom?

Yeah, that's true. It's not a great boat to trailer. I've seen it done, but
it's not fun.

I would think a bulb-like or fin keel would be more appropriate for
what you're looking for. The Cal, for example, has a fairly modern
keel design, given how long ago it was designed.

http://www.sealsspars.com/classy20footer.html

The Cal 20 is a ridiculous choice. It's all cockpit and no cabin. It
performs poorly in heavy air and it is no easier to step the mast than
on a
Nordica 16 or Nordica 20.

The Nordica 20 is one of the few boats that has an inboard diesel, can
be
ramp launched and will sleep 4 in comfort with a built in head , galley
and
has only a 2.5ft draft. It will out perform a Cal 20 anyday as I have
proven
on many occasions. You can actually walk around the deck of a Nordica 20
and
it has life lines all around. The 2 cylinder diesel can be hand cranked,
there is actual plumbing with a sink and stove inside. The bunks are 8
feet.
The storage is excellent.

Fairly modern keel design... what a laugh! The Cal 20 is a low end pig
in a
poke.

Although you can drag a Cal 20 around on a trailer, it's not really
designed as
a "trailer sailer". To be viable a s a true trailer sailer, the boat needs
to
have a fully retractable keel, or a centerboard. Otherwise they are very
hard or
impossible to launch at a large number of ramps. Even a boat with a very
shallow
keel and an internal centerboard, such as the Seaward Fox sits too high
for many
ramps, unless you don't mind submerging the tow vehicle up to the FRONT
wheels
or beyond. Most boat ramps are built and maintained with the idea that the
bulk
of the use will be small power boats. A boat with a 2 or 3 foot draft is
gonna
be difficult to live with as a trailer sailer.

Wait a minute Gary... this is ASA... insults are part of the package. I
defended Ganz in the past... I even tried to help him along .... but his
actions went south in a hurry last year. Reporting me was just plain
uncalled for.

Bring it up a notch. It's not

like you are living together.

To who's advantage would that be? Since I haven't responded to any of your
posts in the manner I reply to Ganz... I can't understand why it concerns
you?

Don't take this form too seriously...... it will lead to high blood
pressure.

Victoria??!! Isn't that a retirement community? :-)

I was out on Bowen Island visiting a friend who just bought a nice place
there this summer. I spent time at Nanaimo and Salt Spring as well... years
ago. I sailed the roaring Malaspina as well as the Charlottes. I stayed on
Texada and saw Dick Island.... they say when the fog rolls in thick... you
can't see Dick! ::-)

CM

Yeah, sailing up here sucks. What route did you use to get to the
Charlottes?

Got on a trip years ago with a buddy I met up with in Prince Rupert. It was
on a Gozzard 36. Really nice boat!
I think we had 1 day out of 10 that it didn't rain! :-)

The west coast is an eye candy wonderland.... I love it there but I agree
about the light winds inside.

I spent last summer cruising in the Charlottes and will be sailing back
up there this coming summer for a couple months. I was being facetious
when I said the sailing sucks. I love it. The winds can be flukey in
the summer on the inside, but they are howling northwesters on the
outside. It is a great run down from Alaska or the Charlottes to Juan
de Fuca about 100 miles offshore. 3 or 4 days of spinnaker.

The thing I like most is the abundance of stuff you can eat out of the
water and off the land. It is very heart warming to know that there are
places you can still survive easily.

I'd love to do that run. I have never sailed the west side of Vancouver nor
much north of Texada.

Same thing here on the East Coast... you can live off the sea easily. The
water is clean and deep blue... I sail near Peggy's Cove and the
Southwestern Shore Mahone Bay, Chester and Lunenburg.

We tried Prawn Traps last summer off of Bowen... but we lost every one of
them..... H-m-m-m-m-m... were you in the area :-) I'm figurin' the log booms
scooped them.

The West Coast of VI is real open ocean sailing. It's best coming over
the top and south. The beat up the straits sucks. North of Texada
(Desolation Sound) is power boat country. A zillion of our southern
cousins and their gin palaces who have run up from Seattle for the warm
water and wilderness. They don't go west because it's too rough.

Traps are attractive. I have spent some time at sea around Halifax and
