I was thinking of an Etchells, but they're so expensive I might as well
get a boat with a cabin... a Tartan 10? Then I thought more along the
lines of a Soverel 33... then a friend said, "No, Schock 35"

Well, this is something completely different. There won't be a class at
any regattas, but it looks like a lot of fun to sail. I wonder what the
PHRF rating is?

Lots of people trick out older Etchells and then can't
sell them. I've seen many good deals on a non-competitive
Etchells. You still get a blazing fast boat for a monohull.

That's true in a lot of one-designs, largely because most of the people
that undertake the task don't pay enough attention to what it takes to
make the boat truly competitive, or their craftsmanship is not quite up

There *is* such a thing as craftsmanship working with fiberglass, it is
best displayed by building (or re-building) stuff that is strong & light
rather than fancy-looking.

Yeah but why pay money for a boat that will only get waxed at regattas
no matter how well you sail? Been there, done that, spent years fighting
back. It's actually more work rebuilding a class boat than it would be
to build from scratch, although you can do a lot of things a stock
builder would not.

Last few times we raced the Lightning, people were sure I'd done a lot
of illegal stuff to it. I did pull a few tricks, but nothing forbidden
by the class rules. And there's more in the bag, it's tempting to buy an
old Lightning and start over.

An Etchells is a big powerful complicated boat, it would be quite a
challenge to stiffen an old boat without making it heavy, and add the
rigging it would need. Not sure I want to go there, it's cheaper to just
buy a race-worthy boat in the first place.

Tom Schock product. What do you think of it?

They are supposed to be good boats and they are popular enough that
Shock has started to build them again. You don't see that very often.
Most people have a lot of respect for Shock as a builder. The one we
sail against is fast although sometimes we correct over him. But
that's the way it's supposed to work when you sail a good race.

I think that may be in response to a few (I'd bet very few) people that
sail where there's a regular fleet, and want a new boat as opposed to
rebuilding.


Most people have a lot of respect for Shock as a builder.

They've built some great boats... the old 23 dagger-keel boats are
mostly still stiff & strong after 20+ years of hard sailing. They built
an early IMS 40 that was great.

OTOH I've also personally seen some really cheesy crap on their stock
boats... back when we were shopping for a trailerable, the S-2023 had a
lot of corners cut and some of the shoddiest wiring I've ever seen on a
boat, and yes it came from the shop that way. Also seen two structural
failures on their racing boats (one on a Schock 35 in fact) that made me
think they were stoned or something when building it.

At least Schock never used vermiculite, though!

I've raced against them too... like the way they look, and they're
fast... I've gotten the impression they're good light air boats, not so
much in heavy air.

There are enough around that they have a class at some of the NOODs, and
I think for the money I like one better than the Soverel 33.
