wrote in message I would like to make an adjustable tiller lock for my yacht. Does anyone have plans/ideas etc? Duh!... YEAH!! Look here now... is it common for you to approach the Cabal of Nautical Knowledge..... the Illuminate of Polars..... the assorted Ayatollahs of Sail Controlas..... with such paltry details???? Tiller Locks depend on location. ....stern hung?... tiller on the rudder stock thru the cockpit sole?.... If you have a fin keeler.... well you have a finicky boat that requires constant attention. I Pity You! Then again I have a Full Keeler with Cut-Away Forefoot that really is the best of both worlds.. Tracks like a train downwind without any tension on the rudder. I have a stern hung rudder and tiller that stays clear of the cockpit. I use a tiller clutch and two adjustable bungee cords on blocks. Tension is adjustable to each side. But seriously... the only use they see is when I'm at a mooring and want to secure the rudder.... or when I'm going below for a crap while single-handing. Maybe you should look into either an Autohelm or a Boat Bitch to man that tiller when you are otherwise occupied! CM |

Why don't you tie a piece of line across the
boat and slip a clove hitch on the tiller. wrote I would like to make an adjustable tiller lock for my yacht. Does anyone have plans/ideas etc? |
Tiller Lock
Its a 32' full keeler. It has a transom hung rudder that is the full
depth of the keel. |

Thats what I do now but wanted something adjustable. Why do things the easy way when there's always a hard way. My boat is a 53 year old carvel sail boat made from a local timber called Jarrah. Beautifull boat and I have had her for 7 years. |

EXCELLENT!!!!
A Real Vessel!!! West Marine has a Tiller Clutch. Adjustable Shock cords with small blocks to the tiller. Use Jam or Clam cleats..... Is your vessel a double ender like mine? CM wrote in message ups.com... Its a 32' full keeler. It has a transom hung rudder that is the full depth of the keel. |

It's a small rig with an adjustable clutch... which is just a sheave that has the turning tension adjusted by a turn screw knob. you can lock them down or just use it to stiffen the tiller. I believe the brand name is "Tiller Tamer" CM |

For God's Sake Man! Cut that thing off and glass
in a spade rudder! [BTW How was my CM imitation?] Despite the theatrics, seriously, I think it would be a good idea to get rid of that rudder. wrote Its a 32' full keeler. It has a transom hung rudder that is the full depth of the keel. |

I bought two Tiller Tamers a few years ago, remembering
one of my skippers had one and liked it. I found it was a PITA and after I broke the first one, I left the spare--intended for another boat in the bag. I don't like them. The plastic is cheap. If you take a chip out of one side, which is easy to do, then the line gets fouled up, and before you know it the whole thing is junk. A cleat on either side of the tiller and a piece of shock cord or light line is all you need. One thing I've seen that works well are a pair of blocks and some line lead to the companionway and cleated off there with cam cleats. Easy and fast to adjust and a sort of remote steering. Pictures please Errol! Tell us about the boat and how it
handles. It is a sloop rig? I bet it fore-reaches like hell when you try to heave-to. wrote Bart Thats what I do now but wanted something adjustable. Have mercy on poor Errol You'll have him sailing
backwards like you do in Overproof! Well, even that would be ok if you did it on purpose... "Capt.Mooron" wrote EXCELLENT!!!! A Real Vessel!!! West Marine has a Tiller Clutch. No its a traditional sloping square transom.

you should not have replied to the rude arsehole (Maroon). the American news

OzOne wrote in message Well yeah, I can afford them :-) So... are you comparing a cat to a double holer? But yes, I do like fin keelers, do you know you can turn one around in just over it's own length....nimble is the word. No..... it isn't but I'm certain you must have a store like it. I got mine
from the local chandlery here in Canada.... but to tell the truth... I agree with Bart on the Tiller Tamer..... use adjustable shock cords and cam cleats. It is a shame. Good idea, crap materials. Also I found
it very slow to free when I needed the tiller free. That could be dangerous. "Capt.Mooron" wrote No..... it isn't but I'm certain you must have a store like it. When I had a tiller pilot, sometimes I'd turn it off, to save the
battery, but still use it to hold the tiller to a set position. Basically you had a hole in the tiller that a pin dropped into, was very quick to pull out. I suppose you could make something similar using an adjustable telescoping pole. SBV "Bart Senior" .@. wrote in message ... It is a shame. Good idea, crap materials. Yeah Scotty.... but the basic idea of the tiller tamer is a good one. It
needs to be re-engineered and made out of stainless steel with a quick release lever as well as a more functional clutch assembly. I might try to build one this winter in my machine shop. I have the tools and raw metal stockpiled. Turn some pieces on the metal lathe.... etc. CM "Scotty" wrote in message When I had a tiller pilot, sometimes I'd turn it off, to save the battery, but still use it to hold the tiller to a set position. I saw a cool deal on an old wooden boat one time...There was a bronze plate on the deck under the tiller, maybe a foot long, with 'teeth' sticking up. Then there was a small bronze flange on the tiller that would slot into any of the notches. Seahag |
