I would like to make an adjustable tiller lock for my yacht. Does
anyone have plans/ideas etc?

Duh!... YEAH!! Look here now... is it common for you to approach the Cabal
of Nautical Knowledge..... the Illuminate of Polars..... the assorted
Ayatollahs of Sail Controlas..... with such paltry details????

Tiller Locks depend on location. ....stern hung?... tiller on the rudder
stock thru the cockpit sole?....

If you have a fin keeler.... well you have a finicky boat that requires
constant attention. I Pity You!

Then again I have a Full Keeler with Cut-Away Forefoot that really is the
best of both worlds.. Tracks like a train downwind without any tension on
the rudder.

I have a stern hung rudder and tiller that stays clear of the cockpit. I use
a tiller clutch and two adjustable bungee cords on blocks. Tension is
adjustable to each side. But seriously... the only use they see is when I'm
at a mooring and want to secure the rudder.... or when I'm going below for a
crap while single-handing.

Maybe you should look into either an Autohelm or a Boat Bitch to man that
tiller when you are otherwise occupied!

Its a 32' full keeler. It has a transom hung rudder that is the full
depth of the keel. The tiller is clear of the deck. My Boat Bitch is
blonde and can't use a tiller (Can you believe it).

Whats a tiller clutch?

Yeah... I can believe it.... best to leave'em at what their best at...
Galley and Berth duties.!!! :-)

It's a small rig with an adjustable clutch... which is just a sheave that
has the turning tension adjusted by a turn screw knob. you can lock them
down or just use it to stiffen the tiller. I believe the brand name is
"Tiller Tamer"

I bought two Tiller Tamers a few years ago, remembering
one of my skippers had one and liked it. I found it was a
PITA and after I broke the first one, I left the spare--intended
for another boat in the bag.

I don't like them. The plastic is cheap. If you take a
chip out of one side, which is easy to do, then the line
gets fouled up, and before you know it the whole thing
is junk.

A cleat on either side of the tiller and a piece of shock
cord or light line is all you need.

One thing I've seen that works well are a pair of blocks
and some line lead to the companionway and cleated off
there with cam cleats. Easy and fast to adjust and a
sort of remote steering.

They can learn, tho. I took one of mine out in the daysailer and told
her the only way we were getting back any time soon was if she helmed,
because I had a 6-pak and had lost interest. By the time we made the
beach she'd been cured of her fear of steering.

Training her to use a wheel might be a challenge tho. Fortunately she's
not blonde so there's hope she might be able to make the mental leap.

Mine was brunette and not much use either. She had trouble with "left" and
"right" driving a car, let alone "port" and "starboard" with a tiller.

Why don't you tie a piece of line across the
boat and slip a clove hitch on the tiller.

Thats what I do now but wanted something adjustable.

Why do things the easy way when there's always a hard way.

My boat is a 53 year old carvel sail boat made from a local timber
called Jarrah.

Beautifull boat and I have had her for 7 years.

Pictures please Errol! Tell us about the boat and how it
handles. It is a sloop rig? I bet it fore-reaches like hell
when you try to heave-to.

Like the Tiller Tender? I'm sure you'll find it with a google search.
