Adjustable Shock cords with small blocks to the tiller.

Use Jam or Clam cleats.....

Is your vessel a double ender like mine?

No its a traditional sloping square transom.

get an Autopilot and be done with it.

Is West Marine in Australia? I looked for it but cant find it listed.

No..... it isn't but I'm certain you must have a store like it. I got mine
from the local chandlery here in Canada.... but to tell the truth... I agree
with Bart on the Tiller Tamer..... use adjustable shock cords and cam
cleats. I've replaced mine 3 times due to the breakage he mentioned.

It is a shame. Good idea, crap materials. Also I found
it very slow to free when I needed the tiller free. That
could be dangerous.

When I had a tiller pilot, sometimes I'd turn it off, to save the
battery, but still use it to hold the tiller to a set position.
Basically you had a hole in the tiller that a pin dropped into,
was very quick to pull out. I suppose you could make something
similar using an adjustable telescoping pole.
