Hand crafted form and fit. Besides unmatched creature comforts, it is really fast - really, really fast. Plus it looks like a sailboat, not some bloated plastic appliance. Check out the hull form and keel - you will see that is one SWEET boat! What a 35 footer! Wouldn't you agree? Amen! Glory to Scanmar! In the highest! Amen! |

Check out the hull form and keel - you will see that is one SWEET boat! The center cockpit on a 35 footer has never worked. Only the small Moody comes close to pulling it off. It's also slower than the 35s5 and has a smaller cockpit, no swim platform. It does have the same excellent Whitlock steering system without stretchy cables! Good boat, but so few built...only about 40-50 in the USA. RB |

Can't you admire it for what it is? Not every boat has or needs a swim platform or Whitlock steering. A properly set up cable system will feel just as good as a Whitlock rack and pinion system. B-52's fly on cable systems, 600,000 lbs at 600 mph, so do F-14's at over 2,000 mph pulling 6 g's.. The center cockpit is a personal preference, as is the swim platform. If you haven't noticed, swim platforms aren't very popular in the Nordic countries. Nor are scoop sterns unless you like ice water. Does your boat have a good heater? What kind and how many BTU? How much ice can it sail through? Is it easy to anchor from the stern? How do the characteristics of your boat change with heavy, following seas when 8 tons of seawater flow in and out of your cockpit? That's almost like sailing with a half flooded bilge. The premise of all of your posts is that your personal choices are somehow better than others. For you, maybe, but for others it's their personal choice that matters, not yours. But you must admit, that by any independent and objective standard, the Scanmar is a classic to be admired by all. Damn, what a nice boat! Amen! |

The center cockpit on a 35 footer has never worked. Only the small
Moody comes close to pulling it off. Wrong. There are a number of center cockpit mid-30-foot range boats. .... It's also slower than the 35s5 Wrong. They're pretty evenly matched. Good boat, but so few built...only about 40-50 in the USA. So in other words, it was not a 'well-advertised product'? Bob Crantz wrote: Why must you compare it to your boat? Somehow I didn't picture that when hearing the phrase "fly-by-wire." The center cockpit is a personal preference, as is the swim platform. If you haven't noticed, swim platforms aren't very popular in the Nordic countries. Nor are scoop sterns unless you like ice water. I dunno, a fair number of Scandinavian boats seen to have the same scoops & platforms. Partly due to mass-production, but partly too I bet many of them dream of sailing off the the Med in their boats. Ahem. Youor premise is faulty. Flooded bilge or not, Boobsy only sails very short distances and in calm waters. But you must admit, that by any independent and objective standard, the Scanmar is a classic to be admired by all. Damn, what a nice boat! Yes it is. http://www.scanmar-yachts.com/Sc35.html Scanmar is one of the classy Scandinavian boats that I've admired for years. A friend bought a Scanmar 33 a few years back, he's loved it. Moody comes close to pulling it off. Wrong. There are a number of center cockpit mid-30-foot range boats. Not wrong at all. Center cockpits in this size range don't look good and the Scanmar is no exception. We actually considered the Moody and they saw one in person. Not a pretty boat. RB |

So in other words, it was not a 'well-advertised product'? No, it's a design that didn't catch on, perhaps for nothing worse than poor advertising and word of mouth. Either way, it will be tough to find one locally and even hard to get info and support on it without some legwork. Take a look on Yachtworld and other sites. They aint easy to find, It's not an ideal boat by any means. RB |
