Sadly the Navy is about to announce that we will officially be
eliminated the Quarter Master's rating. The title will only be a paragraph in the history books. As it stands now, QMs will merge with, and share in the duties of Operation Specialists in 2006. Does that mean they'll have to learn to pour well-sugared coffee into trackball wells? Way things are going that would be de-caff with splendora , in a styro cup. I guess progress means that the Navy no longer needs dedicated Master Mariners ..... They said the same thing when navys began using charts, compasses and accurate clocks. Fine..........you do as you please, the Navy may do as they please. I think it's a mistake...........and I'm calling John McCain today! He's got pull with the Sec. Of the Navy. The gizmos are great, but the basic skills need to be honed all times IMO. I do not think Doug's assertion that if they loose GPS and the Gizmos the ship is Dead Meat....thats bull****! Ever hear of an EMP? The space domino theory? BTW went to a garage sell a few months ago and saw a W&P brass 1930's sextant some lubber drilled 2 holes thru the sight tube and made a wood stand from plywood shaped like an anchor and converted it into a coffee table lamp. It was trashed... and sadly she threw away the case. Joe |
