THE NEW BOAT!!
Flew to St. Petersburg this morning and the deal is done, then she'll
be trucked back after decomissioning. Her condition is superb. There's not a scratch on her deck, hull or anywhere. The interior looks amazing, just about new. She's got full canvas, great mylar sails, tons of extras ice-cold 19'000 BTU AC and even the ports are not crazed because they've always had canvas covers. Electronics are really slick and the Whitlock steering blows away cable based systems. Deck was dry as a bone. Just about perfect. Went for a one hour sail (I only had 6 hours total before flying back), and the boat's a blast. We close November 20th when we all fly back. THE NEW BOAT!!
I am not making this up. An honest to God cut and paste from a review
of the Beneteau 35s5 posted on a Beneteau website from the owner of one of these boats. The Boobster should fit right in with this crowd. Sailing characterisitcs: Don't really understand the question. Motoring characterisitcs: Runs at its best at 2700 RPM 6.5 knots Notice that the guy posting the review knows nothing about the sailing characterisits of his boat but leaves a very detailed comment about how the boat motors. I'm ROFLMAO! |
THE NEW BOAT!!
Nutsy,
A nice looking vessel. If it is or isn't yours. It's nice. It's ours, Thom. Thanks. We did a ton of research and looked at 5 of them to find the right one. She's in bristol shape and literally looks a few years old on deck and below. She sails FAST and I'm in love with the whitlock steering. I had no idea that it would be so superior to the cable based wheels, like my old edsons. It's almost life having the feel of a tiller. RB |
THE NEW BOAT!!
Actually, Loco...he writes "Very responsive in light air as well as
heavy." Other comments: "Speed, speed, speed. Comfort in difficult conditions. Great cockpit." "Sails well in all conditions, typical wind conditions from 8K to 35K in Resurection Bay. Easy to single-hand. Sleeps 6 comfortably and parties 20+. Lots of 2 week cruises in Gulf of Alaska and Kenai Fjords. Great Cruising!" "Best sail in a steady 35K with a bulletproof 110 and 2 reefs in the main. The surge under a 1.5oz chute and 12-15K is something else." "Very, very liveabl. I'm 6'4+ and the headroom is much better than in other vessels I've sailed. A very comfort- able, seaworth and dry boat." "Speed: She's very fast for a production boat. Under sail, she's virtually untouchable." "mostly club racing and day sailing along the coast of southern california. Typically 10-15 knots, occasionally 20 knots. This boat simply loves the open sea. She cuts through 5-6'swells like a knife cutting through butter. Sails up wind like with style and great speed. Points around 27-28 degrees(with the new sails)" And my favorite, from an owner I contacted in California... "For a racer, she a lot of fun and will always do well once you learn the boat's strengths. Downwind can be tricky, especially for the wing. On the other hand the wing is faster on a close reach every time. I agree with you that the 35s5 might be just about perfect for a family boat, but not racing her would be a shame. You're about to enter a whole new world of sailing with a 35s5. We previously owned a fairly tricked out S2 9.1 and we now race against her. The 35s5 eats that boat for breakfast. We also beat the J105's boat for boat at times. Of course the whole point is that the 35s5 does all this and then has one of the best, nicely finished interiors and certainly nicer than the latest Beneteau's. I've attached a pic of Samantha for your website. Please let the group know when it's up an running." RB |
THE NEW BOAT!!
From what I've seen of you past 'sailing' you'll need one behind that
wheel to sit on......or are you actually gonna learn to sail!? Nahhh! She's got a great big feathering propeller and air conditioning! RB |
THE NEW BOAT!!
That's the way Sport, but get rid of the feathering prop....you'll get
better speed and fuel economy Yup, plus we'll keep those silly mylar sails below decks to reduce windage! RB |

Love your rationalizations for owning a Benny TU. ****tzoid of the
Year Award. What do you know about the 32s5 and 35s5? I doubt you know how they differ from most of the other Beneteau's or why they were the most expensive per foot from the builder, so much so that they had a tough time selling them here. How about the beautiful interiors that were made overseas, then shipped here for assembly? Know anything about the excellent hull/deck joint of the 35s5? The fit and finish of this particular line is very high and the boat has very few weaknesses. We came close on the C&C 37 and a few others. There was no real competition, especially after the test sails. Get back to me when you own a boat that can get out it's own way. Robert B Beneteau First 35s5 NY |
THE UGLY BOAT!!
Its a good looking boat from the hull down, A bit boxey looking above
decks IMO, The sharp angle of the forward cabin looks done on the cheap. Nice wheel. I think the cabin trunk is carried a bit too far forward, though it pays off below deck. The odd windows bothered me at first, like the ones on the baby Swan, but they make sense. Below it feels bright and airy. Sidedecks are quite good, though not the best I've seen. The cockpit is simply huge...amazingly so and the swim platform is very nice, not tiny like most others. The starboard saillocker in the cockpit is the biggest I've ever seen. Room for sails, a dinghy and more. Part of the space was a 3rd cabin in an alternate layout. The port locker is shallow, with the aft cabin just below it. All halyards are led below deck and the furler is also below deck. Nice and uncluttered if you watch the lines for wear. Everything feels stiff and solid. Stanchions feel like their set in cement...great! Below deck is headroom for me...amazing! She doesn't have the volume of a fat Catalina or Hunter but the sense of luxury and fit and finsih is far higher. The aft cabin is just under 7 feet...fantastic! The nav station table is pretty large, but the bar-stool for it isn't the best idea. The head is huge, room for people with long legs and plenty of room for a proper shower. Sink has huge storage below and a good wet locker aft of that. The V is also quite large. Storage is plentiful if oddly placed at times. The galley is typical, propane/electric combo, the fridge is a bit small. Lighting is excellent. There is LED floor lighting so you can move around with killing night vision. Halogen lights for anchoring or the slip are very bright. Under sail...well, this is what it's all about. The boat is FAST, accelerates straight off and is just a blast. The R&P steering is light years better than cable systems. She tracks well, better than I had expected and isn't a bear when trim is off. Tweaking pays off right away. The feeling of speed is heightened after a tack because she's back at speed so quickly. The feel of the wheel helps a lot, trasmitting tiller like feedback. I never realized how numb cable steered boats were. Seated behind the wheel, visibility is challenged, so a padded seat will be added. The aft section was made so you could stand and steer from there as well. She's really well done. Fast and Fun and quite comfortable. But, . . . You can't seem to get a larger boat can you? Subtract three feet that the useless, ugly, sugar scoop transom takes up and you have yet another 32-foot boat. Once a sucker always a sucker. Why, I bet my Coronado 27 has about as much livable space inside the accomadation as your French fry - or should I say "small fry?" CN |

Neal,
A real "Salt" would say; "By the Bow" Any sailor would know the Bow consist of the point where the Port and Starboard sides come together; At The Front of the vessel, ONE BOW per vessel on a monohull, be it Scow, Spoon. Clipper, Etc. By the Bow, Meaning lower than its design lines. I, too, am not fond of the " Windows" but I don't believe there will be any delamination problem as with Core Construction, Nutsy? Why lie with pictures? Every one Knows it's not New. You get caught more often than note. You like the Boat you got;------ then screw the ASA Discussion Group. Don't show you insecurity! caught more often than note. You like the Boat you got;------ then screw the ASA Discussion Group. Don't show you insecurity! I'm happy for you!!! Thanks, Thom. She's a slick boat. No lies with pictures. The boat is listed on Yachtworld, along with the one in NJ that didn't pass my survey. The exterior picture I posted is taken with my Nikon D70 and isn't on any website, so Stevie made an ass of himself again. The owner is 73 years old and has won an amazing amount of silver. He's still racing his Tartan 10, which he finds easier because she has flush decks. This was his second 35s5. The beauty of this particular boat is that she was never raced until the last 11 months. She's really well loaded and the mylar sails and air conditioning are a nice bonus. The boat looks barely used as you'll see when I post more pics. We also got her for a really sweet price. The rotten part is that she's in Florida and it's a drag getting her decommissioned. I'm trying to reduce my trips there, though I'll have to fly back November 19th for family business. Anyway...very happy..we found our boat! Robert B Beneteau First 35s5 NY |

11 months ago? How do you explain the fact that
it lost to a Hunter 28 and two J30's in 2001? There's racing and then there's RACING. The boat was never seriously campaigned. Her current owner races a Tartan 10 against other Tartan 10's. Real racing, with new sails bought often, latest gear added and a boat driven hard. Do you know the difference? There isn't a even ONE gelcoat crack anywhere. Every aspect of her rig looks just about new. It's really bugging you that I once again have a nicer boat...only this time it's MUCH nicer! Her condition is something to behold as the pics will show. And she has a real interior rather than the el-crapo Depress 30 interior. So you came all the way back to ASA to show off your green dragon? Nice job!! RB |
