For those of you who don't know: When you think of going through the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific you would think you would be traveling from east to west. Well, think again. In order to go from the Carib to the Pacific you have to travel WEST to EAST through the canal. True story. Well, duh! blondie |

My brother just called - he's on a cruise ship that's just about to enter the Panama Canal from the Caribbean side. Here's a link to the bridge cam: http://www.crystalcruises.com/liveviews.aspx click on "Symphony Bridge View" Cool link Jeff, looks kinda grungy down there today. Humidity is probably so hige that you need SCUBA to breath! Cheers Marty |

Interesting stowage of prop blades Ah ha! I was wondering what I was looking at. How the hell do they deploy that anchor? Round up all the guests and toss it over the side? Cheers Marty |

Cheers Marty That's a spare, just like the prop blades (and quite possibly a tail shaft located someplace else), that would be installed if one of the others were lost or damaged, with shoreside assistance. |

Yelp it's a very smart move to carry spares while visiting other
countries. Back in 81 while working for Pemex in the Bay of De Campeche (mexico) we bent a 72" prop. Had to have one brought in from Texas. We had to pay a 100% import tax of 28 grand. From then on... any of our boats that went overseas carried 2 spare props and 2 spare shafts, 2 engine heads, radio, gyro, and any other equipment valued at over 10K that could fail. Joe |

I think they are just entering the Pacific side now. I talked to my brother, and he loved the trip. He thought the prop blades on the deck were decorative; it didn't occur to him they might be spares! The people on the bow are off duty crew as the passengers are not allowed up there. |
