I set up a new, not-for-profit sailing site with sailing news feeds,

I sail down in Texas, and I'm a member of a sailing club and an organization for my boat. At both there seemed to be something missing in their websites. Since in my day job I'm a professional software developer in my day job, I decided to start my own site. I would think to be spammer you would need a financial motive. (I could be wrong. Who knows what motivates some people.) Anyway, since I started the site on les than a shoestring budget, and since I'm not in it to make a dime, I was hoping to get the word out word of mouth. (It is amazing what you can do with free, open source software.) I know that there is a fine line between word of mouth and loud and obnoxious spam. That's why I will only mention the name once, and only after I get permission from at least one person. After that, the site will live or die on its own merits. If nobody uses it, my wife would probably be a bit happier, because then I wouldn't have an excuse to get out of my honey-dos. (I hope it works. I hate yard work.) My suggestion is to completely ignore idiots like Leland. They are the lowest form of pond scum. People like him have tried unsuccessfully in the past to disrupt the newsgroup. Thanks for the advice. I thought about not posting, because I know that it can backfire. However, I was gambling that there were people here who actually enjoyed sailing, and I was hoping to reach them. Sites like mine only really spread through word of mouth. If a few people really like it, then it just might catch on. I guess what I really need to do is reach into my pocket and buy some ads. I got some free ad money when I signed up with my service, but I have been hesitant to buy more with my own money, especially when this is not a money making venture. As for the meat versus vegetarian lifestyle, and its ethical implications, I refuse to take sides. I like my veggies, but my family had roots in farming and ranching before we moved to the coast. I will spare you the details of that life, but I let's just say I enjoy a good steak now and then. Finally, I got the sailing bug big time. I always admired the grace and beauty of a sailing ship on the water, but I didn't really get hooked until a convergence of events. I used to be the editor for a couple of online RC magazines, and one day I got a RC sailboat in the mail. The site I worked for was dedicated to planes, but I had to give the boat a try. Something about it intrigued me. Anyway, not long after I got hooked on RC sailing, my day-job employer sent me out to San Jose. While I was there, I visited San Francisco. After I saw the boats on the bay, I knew I had to get my own boat. My wife supported me 100%, and now my family and I sail together. It has been the best family time we have ever spent together, and I love being out on the water. You should try it again some time. I will admit it isn't for everybody. Google as well as other search engines, are constantly changing the
algorhythyms used to rank sites. Although it is usually considered important to have links to your site spread throughout cyberspace, it is impossible to say with certainty just 'how' important that is at this moment in time. This is so peeps cannot outguess the search engines and get rankings they do not deserve. For instance, for a while search engines would rank a site by how many times the index page would say a key word on it. So, if SAIL was the keyword you wanted to be ranked under, then all you would have to do is write the word s-a-i-l in white, on top of a white background a couple of hundred times. No one could see it when they visited your site, but the spiders would see it when it came to visit. It would think: Geez, this site says 'sail' 200 times on the index page, so I must rank it higher than the average sailing site that only mentions the word 'sail' 5 times. Now, if you are caught cheating like this you run the risk of being booted out of their results altogether. Google got to be the top search engine by giving good, relevant RESULTS. They set their rules in order to give their users good results. Nothing more, nothing less. The result is all they are interested in. So, use appropriate keywords, and describe what your site is about, especially on the index page. The way to rank higher in the search engines, IMHO, is not to try to go for the obvious words such as SAIL. a quick google search of the word sail produces over 10 million sites. What are the odds of you being on the first page? Nil, realistically. So, how do you rank higher in searches? Go for less used keywords. For instance, if your site is about sailing a hunter 34 in Tampa Florida, then use keywords like "Tampa sailing", "Hunter 34", "Tampa Hunter 34 sailing", "Florida sailing", "Gulf of Mexico sailing" and the like. Got my Daughter-in-Law, who by the way is a record clerk for the Bellingham Police Dept. She finally got my number. I had a terrible choking attack when she identified herself. The only way to be effective against those who wish to disrupt this
newsgroup is to completely ignore them by filtering them out. If one does this, no amount of "escalation" can destroy the newsgroup. For example, my filter seems to have removed about 30 posts since the last time I checked in here. I'm betting that there will now be an intense flurry of derogatory posts. Fortunately, I won't see most them, and those that I will see, I will only see once. The people who are attempting to disrupt the newsgroup are puerile and unworthy of attention. The only self-imposed (or really self-appointed) moderators are uninterested in actual conversation about sailing and related matters. They seek to moderate away anything except chaos.
