VHF is almost useless in the middle of an ocean. It is a line of sight
radio. Not very long distances. You could try to hail a ship before it runs you down, but they probably aren't monitoring it anyway. SSB is the mainstay radio of the oceans. At least on the vessels I have been on. Lots of hammies around the world can relay weather info etc to a vessel in the middle of an ocean. You can participate by checking in with a group of boats as you cross on a daily basis. Everyone reports the weather they have seen. Very helpful. Lonny B "Joe" wrote in message oups.com... If you were to have a VHF and one other 2 way Radio system when you head out into the middle of the pacific ocean....What other Radio would you have, and why? Thanks for your suggestions and important information about SAILING. Joe MSV RedCloud A Boat To ENVY! |
