I would keep it pretty simple, as it's not a good idea to advertise that
you're going to be dumping ashes.

You certainly don't want to do it within sight of any authorities, but
that's pretty easy to do.

Hey first I would like to thank "J" for his kind thoughts. I looked @
http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq85-1.htm and I gleaned a couple of
ideas, but I'm thinking of something less formal. He/we are very free
spirts and don't do conformity very well. I would like to run up the
skull and crossbones, but I havn't run it by his wife yet. I know he
would appreciate it. as for legal.. Basically we are in rural SC on
the ocean, I can sail all day without seeing another boat. Due to the
remoteness where it happened (@13,000 'in Mexico} the red tape etc..
We do not expect this to happen until mid next week. So any other
ideas will be well appreciated..

Good Sailng

not very big (25') we plan on having the bulk of the memorial party on
shore at our house. What is the "proper" way to set the boat up..ie
flags, bunting, etc. He died in Mexico so it will be a few days before
his ashes return here. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Well that's just plain stupid. For one thing, ashes are ashes, nothing
more. The soul is gone, earthly remains are all that's left, burnt or
otherwise.

People perform burial rituals for themselves, not for the deceased...if it
gave them comfort to think that's what he wanted, then, heck..why quibble?

I don't know, shooting the ashes just seems a bit......too much.

Just as an update. I really never thought about laws and ashes. After
all I throw just about as much over after a few good barbecues. Anyway
I called and of course I got the usual 15, Gee I don't know answers" I
was Trasnfered from DHEC to EPA to County Zoning to the Coast Guard
and then back to DHEC before I got an answer. Apparently in SC there
aren'T any laws against it. If fact the fella was telling me about one
person scattering ashes on the public beach..As for guns and all that
mess.. Not what I looking for. Hey he was an ER doc, and as you can
tell from my alias (i hope) I'm a Paramedic/ER RN. We see death almost
an a daily basis. So no big deal.. No it was just that he was a cool
guy, and a young 46. As stated by Katysails this isn't for him but
his family, they're a mess. Really thanks for the suggestions, and the
humor. If nothing else its a nice distraction.

Taking life one day at a time,
Glen
