1. Were do the most iceburgs on earth come from?

It's icebergs..... and though a lot come from the arctic, I would assume
many more are cleaved from the antarctic pack

2 What is Northing

A UTM Coordinate...

3. What is Ice Blink

Never heard of it....

4. What is happening to a vessel when it is nipped

That could decribe many things.... but I've heard the reference used to
describe ice pack pressure on a vessel.

5. Whats a Bergy bit

A floating portion of an iceberg that has cleaved from the main structure

Now... what's a Growler?

Joe March 3rd 05 09:07 PM

1. Wrong
2.Wrong
3.N/A --Wrong
4. half right
5. Correct

A growler is a small bergy bit. Small but still large enough to hole a
vessel.

5. Correct

You can't even denote the mass required to differentiate between a bergy bit
and a berg?

A growler is a small bergy bit. Small but still large enough to hole a
vessel.

Wrong! a growler is an iceberg or bergy bit that contacts the seafloor...
thus the name.

What's a Ice ridge?

What is the minimum depth of ice required to land a Hercules aircraft fully
loaded?

What is candle ice

CM

Joe March 3rd 05 09:47 PM

A growler get its name from the noise it sometimes makes as it bobs up
and down in the sea, not because it is scraping bottom.

A bergy bit is about the size of a house. Both the bergy bit and the
growler are usually calved from icebergs.

I would guess an Ice ridge is were to masses of ice meet and the
pressure forms a ridge.

You got me on the candle Ice.

What is sea ice,
fast ice
shelf ice
ice islands
ice cake
pancake ice
Ice Floes
Ice fields
bending ice
tenting ice
rafting ice
pressure ice
Hummocked ice
weathered ice
pack ice
and last but not least rotten ice

Joe

Joe March 3rd 05 09:48 PM

Q: What's the second most stupid thing to discuss after icebergs on a sailing newsgroup?

A: Sailboats made from steel that are so heavy they are only good as icebreakers up where
icebergs live which is where no sane sailor goes in the first place. If you don't live south
of latitude 25N, you don't live, and that's the truth.

Real sailors don't need no stinkin' sissy ice cubes with their rum. That's
for girly boys such as Gaynzy and his hoe, BB the sissy pretend sailor.

Tepid rum mixed half and half with water is a real day sailor's drink.

Straight rum drunk by the bottle is a bulk carrier captain's drink. (Hazelwood).

Perhaps you are right because you live way up north where it's cold most of the
time and one needs plenty of strong rum for anti-freeze. But, here in the tropics,
one needs to dilute the anti-freeze a little as it is used more as a boiling point
elevator rather than a freezing point depressor.

Get it?

Well well. A Texan has to teach the iceman about what a growler Iceberg
is.

I said

A bergy bit is about the size of a house. Both the bergy bit and the
growler are usually calved from icebergs.

Than Iceman said

That is incorrect..

So lets look at what the USCG Ice Patrol says about Growlers

http://www.uscg.mil/lantarea/iip/FAQ/FAQ_Icebergs.shtml

Q. What is the extreme range of iceberg locations?

A. The grey shaded area is the normal range of iceberg distribution.
The extreme icebergs/growlers are indicated. Some of the notable
extreme icebergs a

In 1926, the southernmost known iceberg (a growler) reached 30-20 N,
62-32 W (about 150 nm from Bermuda).
In 1883, a growler was located about 200 nm south of the Azores.
In 1907, an iceberg was sighted about 100 nm southwest of Fastnet,
Ireland.
In 1912, a growler was seen about 75 nm east of Chesapeake Bay, USA.
In 1912, the iceberg that the R.M.S. Titanic collided with was located
at 41-46N, 50-12W.

So Mooron are you telling me growlers are over 1100-over 3000 feet deep
dragging across the bottom of the Atlantic?

I dont think so.

Rotton ice is ice that is honeycombed and very easy to fall apart with
little temp change.

BTW - Growlers are bergy remaments..

http://www.uscg.mil/lantarea/iip/FAQ/FAQ_Icebergs.shtml

[snip useles and irrelevent data to the subject discussed]

So Mooron are you telling me growlers are over 1100-over 3000 feet deep
dragging across the bottom of the Atlantic?

You ignoramus.... they were originally called growlers because of their
small size and subsequent shoreside accumulations that did indeed cause
noise on the rock beds prevelent in the arctic seabed. They are smaller than
bergy bits.... and yes icebergs routinely scour the ocean bed...

Do icebergs hit the bottom?

Yes. Icebergs often "ground" or contact the seabed and get stuck. This is a
frequent occurrence along the coast where icebergs are brought into shore by
irregular tidal currents or strong winds. Sometimes icebergs "scour" the
seabed creating irregular troughs that may be several kilometers in length.
The edges of the Grand Banks are criss-crossed with old and new iceberg
scour marks.

I dont think so.

Try thinking again....

Rotton ice is ice that is honeycombed and very easy to fall apart with
little temp change.

It is most certainly not honeycombed.... I've used rotten ice as you call
it in the US... which we refer to as candle ice.... for drinks.

Tell me when you next get a frost and try to pass it off as snow!

Difference is Joe... I've been to Texas... you've never been to the Arctic!!

3. What is Ice Blink

I remember reading about this, but forgot what it was.
Thanks for the reminder. I looked it up.

http://nsidc.org/arcticmet/basics/ph...water_sky.html

Water sky refers to the dark appearance of the underside
of a cloud layer when it is over a surface of open water.
(i.e. clouds underside would be light if over ice)

Ice blink refers to a white glare seen on the underside of
low clouds indicating the presence of ice which may be
beyond the range of vision.

When other means of reconnaissance are not available,
water sky and ice blink can assist travelers in navigating
the ice of the polar seas, since they give a rough idea of
ice conditions at a distance.

Q. How many ice cubes should one put in a 18 oz. glass of

rum &
coke?

6 standard cubes... or 8 cubes from the bar fridge!

Anything more causes undue displacement and waters down the

mix
to
unacceptable levels.

1. Greenland

Due to glacial rather than shelf ice.... Antartic is the opposite I believe.

2. The distance you made north.

It's a UTM Coordinate you dufus... like I said!

3. Bart answered

4. Pressure on a hull from ice, Mooron was half right but cliamed it
was from Pack ice.

Okay Einstein... what type of ice allows passage. It's not like you can
negotiate a berg field. The only other ice capable of being broken and still
have sufficent pressure to shift and constrict is pack ice!

5. An iceburg approx the size of an average house.

Oh jeez... the "expert" spouts second hand info from the USCG site!

Joe you haven't seen either icebergs nor bergy bits... you haven't seen the
Northwest Passage while I've been on it. You haven't been in pack ice and
haven't seen candle ice. I have.!!!

Ok Dufas why did you not say "distance made north" you said UTM.

And I could fill my marina with icecubes and it would exert pressure on
my hull, ice cubes aint pack ice...sorry.

The information on the size of bergs and proper names comes from my
studies in the American Pratical Navigator, as does the description of
Growlers and why they are called growlers. Guess you know more about
bergs than Bowditch huh?

And your wrong I have seen rotten ice and icebergs. I told you I have
been to Point Barrow Alaska.

Look dickwad... Universal Transverse Mercator is a metric coordinate system
and Northing as well as Easting is utilized for postioning to whatever
decimal accuracy is required. What about this don't you comprehend??? You
can't have distance made north unless you have an original coordinate to
base it from... it could be distance made south! It's a position... and you
had to pass a navigation course??? Good Grief! You said you were in the US
forces... who do you think invented the UTM System Joe???

If the ice cubes were 40 feet across and 5 feet thick it would most
certainly exert pressure! You don't even know what pack ice is do you? You
can have both mechanically formed and naturally formed pack ice.

Oh good grief Joe.... I've been on ice bergs, pan ice, pack ice, bergy bits
and even grappled to candle ice. I thing I know what a growler, bergy bit or
iceberg is.

Alaska.... the Beaufort Sea.... I've sailed in it. I've flown it and I
worked North East of there on Banks and Victoria Islands. I've worked on
Melville and Devon Islands as well.
