Just got my sails back

UPS just dropped my sails of from their cleaning and overhaul at sail
care. I am impressed. They look pretty good. Got all the leather pockets
replaced on the luff of my main and general restitching and some
overstiching in the clew. Also had 2 jibs and the mizzen done as well.
Anyone else use these guys before?

No, but I've worked over many a tired sail myself. Usually the outer
ends of the batten pockets are the first to go. BTW it's worth the extra
money IMHO to pay for the new hi-tech UV-resistant thread.

So what is your sail inventory? Got any mizzen staysails?

Fresh Breezes- Doug King

Mundo January 20th 05 09:37 PM

I have a 140% gen roller reefing. I have a clubfooted jib also roller.
Main, Mizzen, 2 mizzen staysails (light, and a heavy, Drifter, and a
wind scoop;)I am also almost finished making my new dodger and sail
covers. I had them sew on the same sunbrella on the sun stips for the
jibs. Boat has been painted and all that is left is a couple of days of
bright work when the weather warms. Also installed some new electronics.
Knotmeter depth anemometer. The boat is 30 years old this year. It was
due for a little attention.

Woefully inadequate sail inventory. It's
that of a rank amateur. You need some
storm sails and at least a couple more
light air headsails plus a spinnaker.

I don't do any of that sort of tedious book keeping. It's a simple
matter to look at how the sails set and note the condition of the
stitching when underway and when the sail is bent on, raised or
lowered. The best time to not the shape of a sail is after a good
rain when sailing for a day or so. When the sail dries, all the wrinkles
smooth out and the sail looks primo.

Cappy, do you log sail usage?

I've set up an onboard database with which I track the use of the sail
and the conditions under which it was used based on Beaufort.
It allows me to easily keep track of how much use any particular sail
has had, monitor its probable condition and with a close inspection at
regular intervals assess it's potential life and value for money.
I log any repairs required as well so I know instantly which sail to
take off the boat for repair, and which ones I should be having a
close look at for potential problems.

Saves me a huge amount of time pulling sails out to go over them each
season.

I probably should look at having a programmer put the whole thing into
an easy to use package for commercial sale...I don't think there is
anything like that around.

Sure, when your sails are the size of a beach towel.

???
Does rain have any effect on sails?

How about salt water spray? But you don't have to worry about that

OzOne wrote:
True, I look the sail over every time it's hoisted, and have a quick

I find the "book keeping" is quick and easy, and actually saves time
dragging out a sail that you may not have used for a while to check
its condition.

Considering that un-bagging and un-rolling etc etc then re-folding &
rolling & bagging the sail also takes it's toll, I think that sounds
like a great idea. We used to have a spreadsheet with our sail inventory
and data on the sail such as wind range, apparent angle, mast tuning,
etc etc. It was fun.
