John,
It is rather simple, stick the thumb into the folded fingers to the first knuckle and hold it at arms length. That will give you a 10 degree spread. Each knuckle is two degrees. Top of the knuckle to the hollow between 1 degree, half way up or down is a 1/2 degree. If your sighting is between I say plus or minus. ( When voyaging, a 1/2 degree will get you to 30 miles. A minus gets you inside 30, a plus over 30. To Calib. your fist and arm, stand in the corner of a room and count how many fist it takes to get 90 degrees. Ten should do it for most people but it will let you know what your fist represents Kind of a fun and easy way to check out things that are happening around you. So as of tomorrow the Sun will be 23 1/2 degrees below the Equator. Subtract that from your local GMT Noon reading and you should have your local Latitude. Not sure where your located but St John is about 45 degrees (4&1/2 fists) minus 2 fists and 1 & 1/2 knuckles should be the local sighting (2 Fists and 1 knckle) Give it a try and a laugh at Ole Thom |

I hope you did not pay for the witchcraft of dowsing.
As an intelligent person, if you paid you got ripped off. Wells are drilled into a water table. Where you place your well is of little concern because the water in the water table will be within a foot or two of being lever. CN "katysails" wrote in message ... Oue well was dowsed... "Capt. Ole Thom.. thanks.. but I need more help.. If I was in St.John's 45 degrees N How many fists/knuckles would the Sun be from the horizon at Noon? And please continue the calculation.. step by step. And when voyaging how does one knuckle 2 degrees equal 30 miles.. ? -- Longing to be closer to to the sun, the wind and the sea! Spiritually at: Latitude 21 degrees 19' 9" North. _!_ Longtitude 157 degrees 56' 31" West. Aloha! ___o_(_)_o___ q |

john,
I told you WRONG. Distance between knuckles is 2 1/2 degrees 45 minus 23 1/2=21.5 That would be 2 fists and 1 3/4 knuckles observed on the Noon gmt sighting On the 30 mile would be a 5/8 of a Knuckle. a little better than halfway between the top of a knuckle and the hollow between Knuckles. Each knuckle to knuckle is 21/2 degrees=150 miles Knuckle to hollow between knuckles=11/4 degree or 75 miles Half that distance (knuckle to hollow) 5/8degree=27 miles You can set them up; Fist is 10 degrees Distance between Knuckles is 2 1/2 degrees; 1/2 a fist is 5 degrees When talking miles it is really rough ballpark figures but will get you within 30 miles Get your Fist out there and then you figure the fractions of that observed fist |

For what its' Worth.
The Solstice Season; That is the Time the Sun seems to hang in the Sky. This is caused by the Earth motion around the Sun with its tilted axis. It set up the Sun to rise and fall in the sky. The true action is in a sine wave, with the Solstice periods being the top and bottoms of this wave. the time period being about 27 days. Half of that time going into the Solstice and the other half coming out. So what this means is we'll see a gradual rising of the sun in the sky. This will seem the be a gradual rise. About 8 days for the first degree and increasing until it is about 4 days/ degree (actual 3.7} It is this action that the Sun/Time Tables are set up from. This knowledge makes it possible to use the extended arm and closed fist for ball park sightings at local noons. You don't need Time period tables or sextant. You won't be any where as accurate but with practices you can get close. So, watch the Sun's rise in the Summer Sky at noon. A good time for mid-day cup of coffee Ole Thom |
