Sailing Weather
Wind blowing "Force 5" Hvy Rain. Pretty much the Forecast for the Week-end. Temp. Hi 49 Lo pred. 42. It is 5:01 PM and the Temp is already 34. Don't think it will freeze but will get damn close. Not fun weather for sailing, even with Pilothouse. Wind keeps blowing the Pet Door open. Have to keep the plate in place to keep out the rain. Looks like a couple of days of "Pacific Pineapple Express" Thought I might get out but doesn't look good and with Christmas upon us it looks like awhile. I'll go down and button "Pneuma" up for a winters nap in the morning. Enjoy your boat you southern sailors. By the way Bellingham is; Lat 48 degrees 40 min north and boat stays in the water year round. Ole Thom |

Hi 49 Lo pred. 42. It is 5:01 PM and the Temp is already 34. Don't think it will freeze but will get damn close. Not fun weather for sailing, even with Pilothouse. Hmmm, that sounds pretty crummy. Wind keeps blowing the Pet Door open. Are you sure it's not the ghost of pets of yesteryear? Thought I might get out but doesn't look good and with Christmas upon us it looks like awhile. I'll go down and button "Pneuma" up for a winters nap in the morning. Do you have to do a full winterization? Or do you get enough sunny days that it's worth having the boat available to go out some times during the winter? Enjoy your boat you southern sailors. We will, thanks! Doug,
We do get good sailing weather all winter long. In fact we get better winds in the winter than we do in summer. The problem is the cold. That is why the PILOTHOUSE! I do a sought of a winterizing. Drain the fresh water tanks and install electric heater in the Cabin and light bulb in the engine compartment. When I disconnect the shore power I'm ready to sail. Have to drain fresh water tanks in case of power outage, which is common here. Force 5 with light rain is OK but hvy rain or fog doesn't make for pleasant sailing. Just purchased a new digetal camera and waiting for a A/V jack (Back ordered) Hoping to get some pictures of winter sailing to the group Ole Thom |

BTW do you have a window in the roof your pilothouse, to look up at the sails? Some of our friends have getting these installed in their biminis. I do a sought of a winterizing. Drain the fresh water tanks Don't do that, pour in a bottle of Everclear instead ;) ... and install electric heater in the Cabin and light bulb in the engine compartment. That wouldn't work here, as most hard freezes are accompanied by ice storms that knock out the power. Force 5 with light rain is OK but hvy rain or fog doesn't make for pleasant sailing. Agreed, but it's still sailing! Just purchased a new digetal camera and waiting for a A/V jack (Back ordered) Hoping to get some pictures of winter sailing to the group Cool! We also just got a new digital camera, a Panasonic with a 12X zoom. Should be nice for taking sailing pics. Looking forward to seeing your pics! BTW the Webshots site is good & useful IMHO, it's surprising how many people view my pics there. Usually ~150 a week or so, I wonder how many are randomly surfing thru. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
I thought a pilothouse was to hold in the cool air from the AC's
inside. And Doug, all fine pilot houses have a hatch on top so the helmsman can always see his main. Joe |

Mine doesn't ;) But we do have a closed-circuit TV for watching the engine room. Did you go ashore and check it out? Joe |

Sorry old chap but a pilothouse belongs only on a motor vessel.
On a sailboat a pilot house is an abomination. Ask yourself would you put a barn door on a Lear Jet? CN "Thom Stewart" wrote in message ... Doug, We do get good sailing weather all winter long. Coming from somebody who no longer sails or no longer
owns a sailboat I find it quite easy to discount your little troll. Go fire up that useless trawler of yours and pollute the environment some more . . . CN "DSK" wrote in message . .. Capt. Go fire up that useless trawler of yours and pollute the environment some more . . . Thanks, just went for a nice boat ride yesterday. We cruised down the river to Beard's Creek and checked out the channel, which appears to be badly silted up. It was a bit chilly but that's what the Webasto heater is for! We'll probably go out again next weekend, but not long. I have some work to do installing a new capstan and upgrading the electrical system to suit. DSK |

In reply to CN's comment,
Pilothouses were used on sailing vessels a lot longer than Outboard motors or any motors. They were used on North Sea Sailing vessels, Trade Route Square Riggers, Down East Schooners and anywhere that needed a dry place to work charts and courses near the helm We've discussed this before (with the true Crapton:_ so I'll only mention it in a passing way) All Alias read up on Maritime History. Weather 9:09 PM Temp 55 F but blowing bloody hell! Force 5 but gusting
to F8 and predicted to gust higher. Light rain tonight but to get hvy in the morning. Time to Batten Down; Both house and boat. My "Rubber Maid" stool is missing from my cockpit. The old man was using it as a boarding aid. Don't know is wind blew it over the side or some one figured they needed it more. You people back East; Don't say I didn't warn you about the winds from the West. There're still coming Ole Thom |
