Don't you need indoor plumbing for those to work? such luxury!

We didn't need phone books when I was a lad. You just turned the
crank, and told the operator who you wanted to talk to.

I dunno, maybe not boxy enough for him.

They look sorta like our 18ft Skiffs way back when.

though like most things Australian, waay over the top. :-)

I wonder how long it would take a crack crew to get the ringtail, water
sail, topmast spinnaker, etc etc, all set & drawing. Too bad they didn't
have video cameras back then. Plenty of strings to keep everybody busy!

The heyday of sandbagger racing was in the 1880s and 1890s, so it was
dying out over here when yours was getting a boost.

One of the driving forces behind U.S. sandbagger racing was regional
rivalry. The Delaware Bay boats were the fastest in the early days, and
would come to New York to take home money. The Boston crowd got into the
act too; every medium size port between Philly & Portsmouth had at least
one sandbagger crew.

I don't recall seeing any original photos of sanbaggers racing, but
there are a fair number of sketches & lithos. IIRC they did not carry
any extreme downwind sails, instead they dumped the sandbags off. Crews
for boats ~ 20' would be ten or twelve guys, all except the helm & 2
trimmers were expected to handle several heavy sandbags on every tack.
Supposedly the jib trimmer had to have the quickest reactions of any man
on the boat. A lot of the designers/builders of these things sailed on
their boats as trimmer instead of helming.
